"" It's time to give the devil his due!""
*Spoilers alert for both Daredevil and The Dark Knight*
When I first watched this movie, I was very young, and I didnt really enjoy the movie as much as i did Spider-man (2002). When Daredevil was released on VHS though, i got it as a gift, and was actually happy to receive the movie, especially because i asked for it.The movie Daredevil is not like regular superhero movies. Its a gritty, fast paced ride that keeps you wanting more, and makes you want to watch the movie over and over again. But, the Director's Cut makes you want to watch this movie even more! The film, based off the Marvel comics about a man named Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer in Hell's Kitchen, New York, fighting crime in a court room by day, and serving justice at night as a vigilante known as Daredevil.
Plot:
The story is about a young boy named Matt Murdock who lives in Hell's Kitchen with his father, who is a boxer named Jack "The Devil" Murdock. After a talk with his dad about confronting the bullies that bother him and provoke him to fight, his dad urges him to not to fight, but study and become a lawyer or a doctor. One day, as young Matt was taking a short cut from school to go home, he sees his dad in an alley beating up a man, Matt goes running, ashamed of what he saw. He ends up running into a truck, which Matt quickly dodges, but as the truck is turning, it slices open a drum filled with dangerous chemicals that spray over the eyes of Matt. When Matt is hospitalized, he forgives his dad and they make a promise to never give up and to do what they always think is right. Days later, Jack Murdock is approached by a mob boss whom he was working for, and refuses to give up a fight. Soon after the fight ended, Jack being the winner, is approached in back of an alley and is murdered. The story later revolves around Matt, now a man, keeping his promise to his dad to become a lawyer, but also using his superhuman senses to fight crime by night as a vigilante known as Daredevil.
Acting:
The acting of the whole cast is stupendous. I really liked how Ben Affleck portrayed Matt Murdock as the serious lawyer by day, and the crime fighting hero by night. Also, now and then Matt is shown as more human, and more compassionate. Jennifer Garner is also a great choice as Elektra Natchios, giving a great performance in the fight scenes and seeing as how she was able to have a unique connection with opposite Ben Affleck.
Also, I enjoyed watching Collin Farrell portray the personal Irish assassin of the Kingpin known as Bullseye. It was great to see how crazy this villain is, and how he enjoy doing Kingpin's dirty work for him. This villain, is somewhat similar to of those Batman villains in the sense of how lunatic they all are, and how they have pleasure in what they do. Also, Michael Clark Duncan made the character of The Kingpin a badass, with actual powerful strength to make him a serious threat to Daredevil and a worthy opponent.
Visuals:
The visuals in this movie are generally good. The scars that Ben Affleck's character had on his face and his body seemed so realistic, and detailed to show the audience the tortures Daredevil goes through every night fighting crime. Other affects and visuals such as the scenes in which you see the "radar sense" that Daredevil hears and sees in the movie is really interesting and really genius. Other scenes of him jumping off rooftops and the action scenes were dark, gritty, but fascinating to watch.
Directing:
Mark Stevenson Johnson to me seems like a perfect fit in the director's chair for this movie, and i actually prefer Daredevil:Director's Cut rather than the Theatrical release, but still both are very enjoyable. As you may know, Johnson also directed "Ghost Rider", in which i think he did another interesting job, but the writing and the plot line of the movie is what made it a failure, not his directing. If anything, his directing was a positive of the movie. Moving on, I thought Johnson did a superb job bringing the character of Daredevil onto the big screen and wowing audiences everywhere.
Overall:
In general, I definitely recommend this movie to everyone who loves action movies, or comic book movies or both. Its a strong, creative, fast paced comic book movie that really knows how to make a great character development and actually deliver. Also, I do believe that this summer's blockbuster hit, The Dark Knight, used some ideas from this movie to create it. For example, the idea of Daredevil conflicted on whether or not he's the hero and not the villain is somewhat portrayed in TDK when Batman sometimes crosses the line between right and wrong. Also, the scenes with the radar senses, in which sound bounces off objects and creates a visual is also used in the TDK, but instead its sonar radar located on phones that Batman uses to capture The Joker.
