"A series that was cancelled before it reached its full potential."

THE GOOD:

The best three things about Blood Ties are the writing, directing and the casting. You could not ask for a more convincing cast. They have chemistry and each is believable in their perspective roles. There are a couple of episodes that lack a detailed plot line, but overall the series is engrossing and entertaining.

THE BAD:

As with many made for television series, the special effects are not what I would consider top notch. It is not very distracting from the series but you have to wish that they were done differently or a little more money was put into it so they looked better.

The other bad thing has nothing to do with the show but the network it was broadcast on. Blood Ties has a huge following and I personally do not understand why it was cancelled by Lifetime. I have heard rumors that there may still be a season three, but I am not going to hold my breath. One good thing is that they have yet to disassemble the sets so I guess you could look at that as a good sign.

THE SERIES:

The show centers on Vicki Nelson (Christina Cox), a former homicide detective who has opened her own private detective agency. She had to quit the force because of a degenerative eye disease that would have left her on desk duty. Her being the strong woman she is, this would have devastating to her. The other two main characters are Mike Celluci (Dylan Neal), a homicide detective who happens to be Vicki's ex-partner/romantic interest and Henry Fitzroy (Kyle Schmid), a 480-year old vampire.

Within the first ten minutes of episode one, Blood Prince Part one, the viewer is taken into the supernatural. As with many series, it takes a couple of episodes to really get going. But after the first couple of episodes I was hooked. The stories are interesting and change with each show. There is a storyline that continues throughout which is the love triangle between Vicki, Mike and Henry. A lot of people feel this is just another vampire series but it is not. A vampire is one of the main characters but it deals with all things supernatural from zombies to demons.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

Behind the scenes documentary

Series Trailer

I was surprised the documentary was as long as it was; I found it very informative and enjoyable.

REPLAY VALUE:

Excellent replay value for Blood Ties, it is the kind of series you can watch over and over.

BOTTOM LINE:

I do not understand with only twenty-two episodes why they just did not include all of them on this set of DVDs. There are only nine episodes left so I do not see them producing a season 2 set anytime soon if ever. I can always watch them online, but it would have been nice to have the entire series on one set of DVDs. This is one of those series that should have never been cancelled considering everyone's fascination with vampires as of late. I have read how Lifetime's ratings have dropped dramatically since they cancelled this show and you have to wonder if they continued if their ratings would have improved.

I highly recommend this series for anyone who is interested in the supernatural or vampires. Don't think just because it was on Lifetime that it is just for women because nothing could be further from the truth. It has plenty content in the series meant specifically for the male portion of the audience. Rent the DVDs or watch it online, it is well worth it and I do not think you will be disappointed. With any luck all the petitions, emails, etc. will do some good and they will look at renewing the series.

Thanks for reading.

Another great review, Shelley. This was one of my favorite television series when it came out. Even more so than "Moonlight," which I also enjoyed. Again, Shelley, great review!!!!!
