"Dull"
I had high hopes for this film, well hopes that it would be better than the first Narnia film. Once again I was gutted to find a film that showed so much promise but failed to deliver.
The main characters being children should mean the film is aimed at children. Now I can enjoy a film like that if it is done with that intended audience in mind. For example the SpiderWick Chronicles to me was a really enjoyable film because it focussed well on the audience it was trying to reach.
Prince Caspian I couldn't make out, it seemed too slow for children but then too childish for adults. It tried to appeal to a middle-of-the-road audience and in doing that I doubt it appeals to that many people at all.
Fantasy is fantasy and I can easily accept children fighting trolls, goblins and other mystical fantasy beings. What I find hard to believe is a child fighting a fully grown man with swords on an equal footing - as we have with the duel scene. This to me was complete nonsense. But not having read the Narnia books, apart from the first, I don't know if it holds true to the book? But perhaps the director should have considered the era when these books were written. That sort of story may have worked in those days, may even still work in the book, but on film it verged almost on the ridiculous. To me somebody should have said hold on, this doesn't look right.
I struggle to find anything positive to say about this film, even trying to put myself in the shoes of the younger generation. I find it hard to think they will find it enjoyable, though I may be wrong. The effects were mediocre, the acting was the same. The only person I found even slightly entertaining was Lucy (Georgie Henley). I thought her acting was surprisingly good for such a young actor.
Personally I could happily watch the Spiderwick Chronicles again but I will not be in a hurry to see Prince Caspian a second time.
