"We have a Winner."
Goodfellas put me sleep like a baby. Ray Liotta's acting was real but not interesting, at all. Maybe the worse mob genre film ever made, in my opinion, and Scorsese's worst film. Although, Pesci did do a great job, which he did in all his films. Absolutely, a bad direction in this film, explaining the reason why Scorsese was easily beaten out by first time director, Kevin Costner, for Dancing with the Wolves. With all due respect, Taxi Driver, was only successful because of Deniro's marvelous performance. Not to say the script was bad, which it wasn't, it was great by the way. Just seeing the levels of insanity a person goes through, before he is truly off the charts. But, but that was the time of the Eye of the Tiger. Rocky is just a classic movie, which truly deserves it's award for best picture. Then a while later, Scorsese made that atrocious Raging Bull, where Deniro had to put on weight, well basically now, it was a waste of time. Well, just to let you know i didn't always hate remakes. Not until they started over doing it, but i thought Cape Fear was just great. Gangs of New York, pure shit. The Aviator, super duper, pure shit. So, that just leaves Cape Fear as the only good Scorsese film. That was until i saw The Departed. Man, that movie had a great cast, great story, although adapted, but i was just perfectly directed by Scorsese. However, this is the movie that he should have not been awarded for. I, finally, figured that out once i saw Casino.
I don't know what it was about 1995-'97, but most movie makers who came out with movies in those year lengths, just had great success. Action movies were evolving even more, thanks to birthing of the digital age. This was just the time to really get ahead. You can even go political and give thanks to Clinton's great administration.
The way that Casino, was just brushed aside liked they way they were with just one nomination for best actress, who didn't even win, made me realize just how stupid the Academy Awards were.
Pesci, as I said before, does a great job, which ever project he's on. Whether he's a Super, house thief being annoyed by a bratty kid, or my favorite appearance, as the nuisance Leo Gets, he just fantastic. "Whatever you need, Leo Gets.". He can take roles that are usually seen being played by guys the size of Sylvester Stallone. Unlike Deniro and Pacino, Joe realized that you should leave showbiz, while your still on top of your game, which he did. Poor Al and Robert still try to get audiences' attentions, unsuccessfully.
I first saw Basic Instinct when i was ten years old. When my parents were out on a date, and the babysitter was asleep, i sneaked downstairs and took this movie from my father's collection. Sharon Stone became the pride and joy of my little life after I saw that movie, that was until i saw the gorgeous Sarah Michelle Gellar, on I Know What You Did Last Summer, who completely took my breath away.
Casino isn't your typical gangsta, adapted from a true story- type film, here. It's based on, the now deceased, Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal, who ran the Stardust, Fremont and the Hacienda casinos in Las Vegas for the Chicago Outfit from the 1970s until the early 1980s. Although it's very long, you will not be disappointed in watching this, because it is just stupendous. You'll just see great performances done everywhere, including James Woods, who didn't have a big, big role, but very memorable. On a side note, this film came in at number 3 for the most occurrences of using the word "fuck", which is topped by a movie called Fuck, how convenient.
