"Grudge Remake Anyone?"
Entering the theater I can honestly say I didnt have too high of hopes for this movie, I really just wanted to see a trailer for DB which they DIDNT show. So theres strike one and the movie hadnt even started yet.
The beginning of the movie is pretty standard, couple gets married and must relocate for the husbands newly acquired job as a photographer. So they move to Japan to start their new life and whilst on there way to the honeymoon, the wife, who was driving, runs into what appears to be a girl(go figure) in the middle of the road.
SPOILERS*****
The girl that was supposedly hit by the car mysteriously vanishes after the crash. We later find out this girl was the newly-wed husbands ex girlfriend and that the girl has been dead for sometime, unbeknownst to the husband.
The wife, having nothing else to do and creeped out from seeing the girl in all her wedding photos, sets out to research the whole thing. She later discovers that her husband had been an accomplice to the raping of this girl and that the girl had just been trying to warn her the entire time.
The wife, to my surprise, leaves her husband, and the husband is left to fend against the spirit himself. In the closing scenes, we see the husband try to "eradicate" the spirit by putting a flash bulb to his neck and hitting the switch. This goes poorly, as it should, and he basically lands himself in a psyche ward, where wouldnt ya know, the spirit of the girl is still with him. End movie.
Likenesses to the Grudge and/or the Ring:
1. The girl looks the same and does similar scary things.
2. Setting, Japan.
3. Hallway scene in the Grudge with the sounds and flickering lights, same in shutter.
4. The photo distortions in the ring are very similar to that in shutter.
*******
Overall, I found the movie to be very predictable and rather unoriginal. The only thing this movie had going for itself was that it contained very good horror music and had the audience jumping at scary parts much like in the Grudge and Ring.
I would not recommend this movie to anyone that has seen "The Grudge" based on the sole fact that it is like watching it again with a slight change in the plot.
I give it a C-.
