"Ready for some spoilers?"
Well, i saw Cloverfield. ISR was invited to a special screening at The Metreon In San Fransisco. A bunch of other dudes got invited too. Like Millions so we, me and Boone had to get there extra early. Something like six hours earlier. It was ok though the Metreon has a bunch of cool shops and I managed to score on some Marvel Zombie Minimates that I'd wanted for awhile. They are awesome. Ok, so we sat on line for like ever. I read Chris Jericho's biography, he's a wrestler and Boone borrowed this graphic novel that I grabbed from the library. It was about gay folk but Boone said that it was pretty good.
So, the movie. The movie is good. The comparisons to Blair Witch are pretty accurate. There are a lot of shaky camera shots. Lots of them. Blair Witch made me mad queasy. Cloverfield only gave me a head-h. That's a little bit better. After Blair Witch I fully wanted to puke. Cloverfield is cool though. It's short though. We saw an 8:00 screening and were home in Santa Rosa by 10:30. That's nuts. It's like an hour drive. There weren't any previews though. That cuts some time right off the top.
I have to admit that I was underwhelmed. I guess after all the hype and all the build-up I expected to fully get my mind blown and it wasn't. I had a really good time and fully enjoyed the flick but it wasn't the genre defining flick that I was expecting. It's good though. Don't get me wrong. It's totally cool just not like the greatest movie of all time. I was bummed about that. I expected that it would be. I guess it's not really fair to go in expecting that. It's a little too much to out on your head. Sorry J.J Abrams.
The deal is that this dude Rob, the famous Rob of Slusho fame is moving to Japan to take a job with Slusho. Slusho is like a slurpee or whatever. He's on his way overseas for a big opportunity and his friends are throwing him a big going away party. A surprise party. The big surprise is that the party happens to be on the day of mankind's first MONSTER ATTACK!!!
Everyone is partying down and everything is going smooth when Rob's best lady friend Beth shows up at the jammie-jam with a new dude, Travis. Turns out that Beth and Rob had gotten down recently but Rob being a douche bag never called her after that. What a tool. Beth is BEAUTIFUL. The lovely Beth is played by Odette Yustman. I'd never heard of her either but she had a small part in Dewey Cox. As the reefer girl.
So Rob gets all pissed when Beth shows up with another dude. They fight and she storms off from the party. Then it happens. Everyone is getting down and having a good time when the walls start to shake and shrapnel hits the street in front of Rob's apt. It's scary. Everyone runs out there to see whats up and it's chaos. The Statue Of Liberty's head crashes onto the street. We all saw that in the trailer. The trailer is esentially the first part of the movie. After that it pretty much all goes to hell.
Confusion reigns. It's awesome how the people are pretty much at ground zero for the attack and they have to turn to the TV news to find out whats happening. The monster is pretty much right over their heads and they need the news to tell them what is actually attacking them. I guess that the real life idea that a massive monster is destroying the city around you is to bananas to imagine to be real. Who could believe it even though it's happening all around you. It's easier to believe that it's terrorists or whatever.
While hiding out in a store Beth calls Rob on the phone and tells him that she is trapped in her apartment. I wonder where Travis is. Prolly dead. This is where the story start. Rob and his little posse of friends decide, well Rob decided to go and save her and the others go along with him. Prolly out of fear of being alone. They just can't figure out what to do. It's too freaky. Serious, it's way freaky. The beast is practically right over head and it's gigantic and horrible.
After that it's pretty much all action and romance. The main conflict is that the Army has decided that the monster is too harsh and that the only option is too nuke the whole city. Yep they are gonna nuke Manhattan. So they are gonna nuke the city and our little band of adventurers has to rescue Beth and get the hell out of Dodge before the bombs come.
Look, go see Cloverfield with an open mind. Make Like Chuck D and don't believe the hype. It's a really good but not great monster movie. You and your friends will prolly have a really good time watching it and there is plenty to talk about after words so plan on getting pie and coffee when it's all done. I can write a lot more but I don't want to blow any more secrets then I already have. Most of the fun is that you don't really know anything about what's going on. So go and see it and have a good time jerky.
