Ever since the Star Wars movies people have been talking about Hayden Christensen in a negative way. And when i heard he was going to playing in this movie i actually got intrigued. I seemed to be one of teh very few people that appreciated Haydens work in regards to the trilogy. What people dont seem to realize is that when Lucas got his hands dirty and involved himself in the dialogue, he kinda made Christensed underappreciated. But Jumper takes a whole new spin for this young actor.
The Movie starts off with Haydens character David in high school. He meets up with a girl he has a crush on and gives her a gift (broken snowglobe bought at a garage sale. HOW THOUGHTFUL!) A local bully who seemed to be patronizing David and his kind gesture steals the globe out of the girls hands and throws it onto a thinly ice covered stream outside of their school. Determined to get it, David slowly walks across the ice while the children yell for him to get off of it and not be so stupid. As David reaches the globe he falls through into the freezing waters. He becomes trapped under the ice and stays under for quite sometime. While the children watch in horror as they see no signs of David coming up for air, they all assume he is dead. At the very last moment David teleports into his local library only to be discovered by a crowd of onlookers wondering what has happened.
As David starts to realize his endless possibilites he decides to run away from home as his mother did when he was 5. He heads home and takes a hidden stash of money he had been saving and starts to pack as his abusive drunken father stumbles in to scold him after leaving a muddy wet trail through the house he had left because of his near death incident. He locks the door to his room while his father attempts to break in, and as he does so David teleports to the library again. Only to notice that this time the area is completely blocked off due to water damage. As David teleports back home to get his belongings he sees his father talking to the police about him being a runaway. We then see the girl Milley which whom he gave the gift to crying in her room to the loss of David. She looks out her window and sees the snowglobe sitting on a swing in her back yard. At that moment she realizes although David is nowhere to be seen, he must surely be alive. Then we see David moving into what seems to be a rundown apartment building. He practices his new ability and tries to control it in a nearby park. After getting rather used to it he attempts to rob a bank. To his surprise he manages to get in and out with hundreds of thousands of dollars in mere seconds.
After years of doing this we see an older much more mature David living at the top of his game in an apartment in New York. He daily Jumps to different countries for lunch dinner or just for a stroll. At night he jumps to London to drink at a bar where he meets up with a random woman for a one night stand. He eventually heads home do meet milley the girl he gave the gift to as a boy. He finds she is working at a bar where he tells her he wants to take her to Rome and without a second thought, she agrees. He pays for a ten hour flight first class as opposed to jumping so as to keep his ability a secret. They end up in the infamous Roman Colisseum where he runs into another jumper and a group of Palidans, a organization bent on killing Jumpers since before the Medevil period. He is arrested for trespassing after the mysterious Jumper kills the two Palidans. While in questioning his mother appears and helps him escape. In doing so she disapears again and leaves David to fend for himself. After the getaway David reluctantly tells Milley to go home alone because he cant go back right now. She begins to tear up and walks away to the counter where she buys a ticket and heads home. David meets up with the other Jumper in an attept to team up Marvel Comic style, and take out the leader of the Jumpers (Sam Jacksons character). After a heated argument they come to terms and and agree to a temporary alliance. The Jumper informs David his family is in danger and will all be killed. since Milley is on the plane for another 8 hours he figures she is safe until she lands. The duo regroup and head to the airport in New York where they discover the time difference was not put into calculation and Milley has already landed about an hour prior to their arrival. Now David has to head to her place in order to stop the Palidans from killing his love, but before he can do this he heads to his fathers home where he lies in critical condition after being injured by the Palidans. David takes his father to a hospital to recieve help and then heads to Milleys. He is able to retrieve her and bring her to a safe spot but they are followed by the Palidans through a wormhole known as a Jump Scar. They kidnap Milley again and in another argument between the two Jumpers David is forced to have to betray his alliance or else Milley will die. He goes back to save her where he fights and defeats the Palidans and leaves Sam Jacksons character in the middle of nowhere. Milley forgives David and the two head off to find Davids mother. After locating her it is revealed that she had another child, Davids sister, and that his mother ran away because she was a Palidan and would have been forced to kill David. Her love kept her from doing so but had to run away to start over. David understands but is still hurt by this and is comforted by Milley. The two hold hands and decide to head to a much warmer and or tropical climate.
The movie itself was great with excellent visuals although in some areas the transition between scenes seemed to be cut short as to allow the movie to press forward. We will be looking forward to see all the extras that were cut out of the film when it comes out on the DVD in the future im sure, but as for now this movie was really entertaining and in my opinion worth watching many times even in the theaters. I know I will see it again for sure.
