TRANSFORMERS (2007)

"No more then meets thee eye...actually just keep them closed for two hours. "

Let me make this very clear before I get ahead of myself, going into this huge mega action laden, special effects machine of a film, I had very low expectations as far as story, and dramatic content were concerned. I wouldn't expect anything more from action entrepreneur, director Michael Bay. I got what I expected, and yet, I was still disappointed. How you ask? I guess the main reason would have to be that Steven Spielberg, the summer movie GOD himself, was executive producer of this summer blockbuster. This gave me hope that perhaps this digital monster of a movie might have a small heartbeat of a story. I was wrong, and rightfully so. As a kid I never really liked Transformers the cartoon (I was a Voltron fan myself), and I have to say that true fans of the original must have been delighted with this film because it was very close to a 20 minute episode of the cartoon both in content and pacing. It went by very quick, had very little to no build up, and certainly lacked the "awe" factor as I like to call it. The Transformers just show up and are completely excepted for what they are, alien robots as tall as buildings. No classic moments like in ID4, or Spielberg's War Of The Worlds that show us that moment when humans first get sight of this awesome power, no looks of bewilderment or fear, no feeling like what was happening was epic, just the wow it's a huge freaken robot lets crack a standard Michael Bay joke to completely ruin the moment. This is what killed the experience for me. The special effects and implementation of those effects are dead on. The action sequences (although slow starting) were heart pounding and intense. There were a few action scenes that in my opinion were a bit short, especially the sequences with the Jet Transformer Starscream. My advice to anyone thinking of seeing this film, expect lots of crazy robot fights, cool shots of buildings getting destroyed, robot fists flying, and blaster cannons firing. Do not expect however, one ounce of human emotion, any mediocre quality acting, or a sense of importance in this film. It is what it is folks, a big hunkin piece of summer blockbuster. A smash um, crash um, rock um, sock um, robot fuelled, Michael Bay film. Enjoy
