CREEP (2005)

"Are they asking to die?!"

This film, directed by Christopher Smith, had all the right ingredients for a good horror film, but didn't quite do it for me. It's one of those dvd's that I've seen at Blockbuster whenever I scan the horror section, but never get. Since it was a "rewards" day and I could rent it for free, I gave it a try.

The movie has one fairly known actress, Franka Potente (The Bourne Identity), who plays Kate. I think she portrays an actress, who decides to leave a party alone to go and meet George Clooney. While at the subway station (in France) waiting for the train, she falls asleep. She wakes up and there is no one there. That was the first issue I had with this film. Who falls asleep in a subway station? Why didn't anyone wake her up? Why did no security guards or workers wake her up during their closing rounds to make sure no one gets locked in? But I guess they had to set up the major part of the film and could think of no other way to do it. Oh well.

So - Kate is locked in and there is absolutely no way she can get out of the subway station. The doors she attempts are all locked up. Is she alone? Nope. There's some sort of mutated, albino freak down there who kills people for absolutely no reason.

Along the way she meets a homeless couple and their dog. I think the only reason they are in the film is so the "creep" has more people to kill.

The characters do the opposite of what they should do when confronted by the "creep". I found myself screaming at the TV, they were so idiotic! It's as if they wanted to get killed. I realize that some horror films do that on purpose, but this was ridiculous! In multiple scenes there were plenty of opportunities to grab some sort of weapon to fight with, yet they just run away. Dumb.

Like I said, this movie was okay, but could have been alot better. It would have been nice if the director would have given us a bit more of a back story regarding the "creep"; how he got there, etc., as well as a bit more information on Kate. It's hard for me to care about a character when I know nothing about him/her.

I did like the subway set up. The visuals were nothing spectacular, but the lighting was always sufficient. Nothing amazing with camera angles, and I do feel the directing could have been better.

Not a total waste of time, but perhaps wait like I did when you can rent it for free!
