"The best part of this movie happens at the end…. it ended!"
As far as I'm concerned, there have never been better spoofs than the Airplane series (making fun of the Airport disaster flicks),and the Naked Gun series (making fun of police movies). That's right, not even the Scary Movie series holds up... and I'll tell you why. The Airplane and Naked Gun flicks were actually funny.... and clean. The Scary Movie flicks are funny... no doubt... but they rely way too much on the gross and disgusting. In fact, if you want to go in that direction, the better spoofs would be the Austin Powers series (making fun of the spy films, specifically James Bond).
Then came the flat out stupid. Like Meet the Spartans, Not Another Teen Movie, Date Movie, Epic Movie, The Comebacks, and Superhero Movie. Ugh... when will it end. Most of these end with the word "Movie"... so it's possible that this film's original name was Dance Movie, but changed to Dance Flick in the hopes of better luck. NOT! I'm going to make this review as short as possible because the movie does not deserve to much of my precious time. Here we go.
A rich, suburban girl named Megan White (Shoshana Bush) gets into a series of misadventures when she moves to the inner-city. Street-smart Thomas (Damon Wayans, Jr.) helps her along the way. Both, however, begin to fall in love with each other as they try and help one another realize their dreams. The film is primarily a parody of Save the Last Dance with a nearly-identical plot and structure.
With the recent disappointments in the spoof movie genre, we needed something fresh and funny. Well we're obviously not getting it from this movie. The past few years we have had a major thing for dance movies like: Save the Last Dance, Step Up, Stomp the Yard, You Got Served, Honey, etc. Leave it to the Wayans Brothers to finally put this genre in the spoof category. Unfortunately Dance Flick did not meet my expectations, it was one of those movies that used all the funny clips in the trailer. How many times have we seen THAT before? As with most spoofs, Dance Flick is a huge let down.
Let me say a few words about the acting.... ha ha ha... ha ha.... HA. Are you kidding me? What possible acting lessons do you need to star in one of these stupid movies? Answer: NONE. So to say any one of the actors did a great job in the acting department is simply a slap in the face to the industry. So I stop here without further comment on the subject.
I will have to admit, the dancing at the beginning of the film and the street dance challenge at the end of the it was somewhat funny. I think I chuckled a few times, but everything else in between was just flat out horrendous. The Wayans had their run in this industry, but I think its time they hang up their dancing shoes (ugh, sorry). They're just not funny anymore. How does anyone stop being funny? Robin Williams still has it. Jim Carrey still has it. Hell, even Mr. Drama Tom Hanks can still be funny. What the hell happened to the Wayans?
This is simply a very, very, VERY bad film. I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy. Um.. maybe I would. But only because he's an idiot and he'd probably like this piece of crap. I'll tell you what the best part of the movie was.... the ending. Why? Because it ended. The torture was finally over. I'll give it a half star because it actually made me chuckle once or twice. But not three times... I swear.

The very first parody was Casino Royale in 1967 with David Niven, Woody Allen, and Peter Sellers who made fun of James Bond. Then came Mel Brooks who came up with Blazing Saddles and High Anxiety in in 1974 and 1977 which made fun of the Cowboy genre and the movie Vertigo, respectively. Then came the orignal Airplane in 1980... which made fun of the disaster films Airport, Airport '75, Airport '77, and Airport '79.
So these movies were kind of original. I mean, the concept of making fun of serious films, was fairly original. Then every Tom, Dick, and Harry decided to start making spoofs. Some hit... and some missed.
Grant it, the first Naked Gun film came in 1988 so it was not too original. In fact, Spaceballs and Top Secret came before. I just think Leslie Nielson is hilarious in those film. And since you think Dracula Dead and Loving It (which I really didn't care for personally) is "the greatest parody of all time", I figured you would understand the whole Leslie Nielson thing, Newkill.
Anyway... I guess you're right about originality not being a factor too much, but I think the reason so many critics and reviewers like us are hard on parodies is because they've made so many bad ones lately.
Thanks to all of you guys for writing in comments, by the way. Very greatly appreciated.
But overall, the Naked Guns and the Aiplanes were original. These spoofs nowadays are just dreadful.
And Newkill.... what do you mean the Wayans are just getting started? They've been around since the early 90's. It all started with In Living Color... which by the way ignited Jim Carey's career as well.
