DISTRICT 9 (2009)

"The best sci-fi ever."

So i went to watch the film with my sister and her friend, and they hated the film saying shit like "it was too dark", but i will tell you right now i thought the film was nothing short of brilliant. I don't know what it is but i personally think that woman just think one dimensionally and expect things to be light and have flowers around it, the bitter truth people is that reality is very bitter and discussting and this film captured it.

To begin on this review, i would like to say the setting was great in all its glory, it was great to see all of New York and L.A put to rest for a while. The setting was chilling and airy which pushed up the alien effect a bit more and gave me the viewer the feeling like i was there suffering with him. To also just say that the film did not only depict Africa as being a nasty jungle inhabited by savages, but showed the side that most films made in America don't, that there are cities just like New York some even more vast. The aliens themselves were the way i would expect them to look if they had to land on earth, they are so hard for me to even describe, thus the film's naming of them "Prawn".

Directing on the film was so much of a treat, unique camera angles and lighting that brought out more on these townships and characters. The interesting factor of this films direction is how the fast cuts work out in documentary format and then later into cinescope. And i would just like to say that the film's director Neil Blomkamp is a future shock that needs to be observed a bit more. Jackson why didn't you hire this guy for Halo?

The story is brilliant and has you on the edge of your seat on every scene, it has a protagonist who is like no other you have seen in most films. The character who's name is too long and difficult to pronounce is very weak and at times dull, which you never see in action films. The story see's the character get infected by the alien DNA and begins to witness a change in his body, the film also is a metaphor to the xenophobic purges that occurred in South Africa. I think it was very clever to set the films plot around this.

Everything else works for this film, the sound can at times alternate from quite and low, the effects were sweet, the creatures looked so much cool and realistic, the ship is a gigantic metallic "castle" which i so much loved because that is how an alien ship would or should look, which increases the airy feel.

So there you have it folks, if you haven't seen this film, go see it, even if you aren't such a big fan of alien films, go see it and you will have an all new look towards the genre. If you have already seen it then you will already know how much of a classic it really is. And if you did not like the film because you thought it was too dark, stop your bitchin and learn to appreciate the film for what it really is a pop culture classic and at the same time a great pop corn film with a moral and message behind it.

So go and see it.

Bring on District-10.

Brutal movie. Pretty fucking awesome. A bit early to be calling it a classic though, isn't it?
