What a shame! This could’ve been a good movie but instead it’s a depressing film with no purpose and no self-realization and no power at all. It’s based on a book I never read, I must admit and some people may find this movie genius because it shows a few characters whose lives just can’t seem to go right and they’re slowly… falling apart even more leading to a very tragic end that adds to the depressing mood this movie’s already had since the beginning. Well, it just doesn’t cut it for me.
In the end, I just don’t see the meaning of this movie and I think most audiences would feel the same way. Yes, it shows two young lovers who are probably the only people in that small town who seem to get it right. They might even remind us of the Kate and Sam Rockwell’s characters when they were young and in love. Maybe the film wants to show that it could be a vicious cycle, that it could happen again eventually, either that or the tragedy would bring the young lovers to a decision to leave town if they want their relationship to succeed and not end up like Kate and Sam. Who knows…
As far as acting goes, I gotta hand it to Sam Rockwell, his previous movies have shown that he’s a talented son of a gun but SNOW ANGELS isn’t going to be the one that’s going to get him nominated unless I’m proven wrong.
It’s a nice try for Kate Beckinsale. There are many movies that depict terrible mothers and I think Kate does an okay a job but after seeing what Charlize Theron can do or what the recent Oscar nominee Amy Ryan can do, Kate’s acting seems like a good effort but not good enough.
Some say there’s something unique about the directing, the photography and the editing aspects while I don’t really see anything fascinating about them. It’s just another independent movie that turns out to be a let down and it’s bound to go nowhere just like most of the people who will get stuck in that small town forever.
