Well this is as good as it gets when it comes to Jason Vorhees also as gritty and realistic as Jason will ever get. Is the movie a redefining landmark in the slasher genre? hell no but it is a damn good entertaining Jason film with some incredibly fresh new additions to whats become a stale franchise. The movie takes itself seriously but not too seriously. It panders to the cliches of it's genre but then again Friday The 13th pretty much created the cliches of dumb sex crazed potheads, checking out the strange noise, going to investigate it unarmed, the use of a stationary cam to look like you're watching from the killers eyes it's all there and all in good fun but takes itself seriously enough to create an atmosphere where it's jump scares (which are key) work.
The acting is the best in a Friday The 13th film but as per Friday The 13th tradition you do have two or three awful actresses clearly there just to flash some boobies for all the teeny boppers but Jared Padelecki, Danielle Panabaker, and Amanda Righetti do a fantastic job making you instantly hope for their survival and as usual slashers give you sweet nice people to root for and cocky dipshits you cheer Jason on to kill. Travis Van Winkle who played a cocky dipshit in Transformers plays the same role here to perfection and ironically both characters names are Trent...something about the name Trent just screams egotistical, asshole jock? Derek Mears is a great Jason but what Bay and Nispel did to make their Jason unique and differant were phenominal additions that really made this movie better than the others.
This Jason Vorhees is savage yet smart, he doesn't just walk and appear out of nowhere, he runs fast, and has trenches and other pathways to get ahead of his victims. The make it abundantly clear that Jason knows Crystal Lake inside and out so it adds a more realistic tone to the series and character. Of course they don't stray too far away Jason is still an immortal and can break the laws of physics but he doesn't do it in such and obviously campy over the top way. Best of all there are no telekinetics or demons from hell they bring Jason back to reality and make him a mean son of a bitch.
The flaws here are obvious it's a slasher movie that doesn't try to be differant what it is is a Jason movie that tries to be differant and while the effects, blood, acting, and tone may be better it still has the giant cliches and stereotypes not to mention predictablilty of the past films. Nispel creates a solid atmosphere dark and dank like his Texas Chainsaw remake to which Friday The 13th looks and feels exactly like. Both 2003's Chainsaw and this Jason film have dark, sinilar looking torture shacks, both have similar characters, both Michael Bay's version of Leatherface and Jason act and have similar mannerisms, and the music and settings look very much alike. All in all this is what it is a Friday The 13th flick and a damn entertaining one. It's a perfect remake in the sense that it remains faithful to the style and type of characters from the original enough to satisfy Jason fans while changing the character and his mannerisms enough to make this feel like an entertaining horror film that's new to those tired of the Friday formula.
