"Interesting screwball comedy!"

LEATHERHEADS is a pretty good screwball comedy. Non-stop slapstick humor with fast talk and witty remarks that go back and forth between each characters. It’s a period piece that’s all fun from start to finish.

It’s meant to entertain us and nothing else. Clooney’s directing sorta reminds us of how… funny physical comedy was back in the days of the silent movies. LEATHERHEADS is a refreshing change of scenery for Clooney to take after having done mostly issue-driven movies in recent years. It won’t be nominated for anything but you’ll definitely have a good time watching it.

No doubt that the casting director, Ellen Chenoweth did an excellent job. The actors and actresses chosen are perfect for the roles. Along with costume and make up, they look like they’ve been taken here straight from the 1920s just to do this movie.

I like how the film uses old school photography to show still images and shots of the boys playing football. It adds to the feel of that era.

Standing ovation for the genious Randy Newman who composed the music score for this movie. His music dances along and manages to keep up with ever scene. The movie would’ve been dry without it.

He even has a cameo in this movie as the guy playing the piano.

It’s refreshing to see George Clooney take on something that’s not issue-driven (Syriana, Good Night & Good Luck, Michael Clayton)

There’s a scene where George and Renee Zelweeger’s characters are running away from the cops. That scene is what reminds me of the old silent movies. If it had done without their voices, it still would’ve worked because of the timing and the humor.

John Krasinski’s transition from TV to movies is getting better with this one as opposed to the awful License to Wed.

I have to give you a heads up, this is not a laugh riot. You won’t find yourself busting your guts or your side gets hurt from laughing too hard. But you won’t be disappointed by it either. It’s a romantic comedy more than a sports movie, in fact it barely focuses on how the team got from worse to better.

Don’t try to analyze it too much when you’re watching it, just take a date, sit back and have fun!
