Disappointing

Disappointing would be the word I use to describe this movie. It lacks smart comedy meaning when the punch lines arrive, you often end up confused cause you don’t get it, plus there are slapstick scenes that are just done for… the heck of it without any purpose at all and they’re not even funny. MEET THE BROWNS should’ve just stayed as a stage play and never turned into a movie. It would work better as an illustration for a sermon than as a full length feature film.

I don’t know what happened, I really enjoyed Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married, but MEET THE BROWNS doesn’t even come close to that.

There’s the usual family dinner scene but the conversation revolves only around the words ‘pimp and ho’s’

Angelina Basset is a great actress, don’t get me wrong, and she is a national treasure and very perfect for this role. I can’t think of anyone else who could’ve done it better but too bad she’s placed in the center of a team of actors who can’t keep up with her talent.

Storywise, there are just too many unexplained things. You’d see one scene happen and then another scene supposedly has some sort of connection to the previous one but you just don’t see how the two meet.

For a drama/comedy, the problems get resolved too easily. Tyler Perry’s a religious man, maybe his movies got some miraculous powers, who knows.

That said, I do admire Tyler Perry’s determination in making his story powerful despite its weakness. By that I mean I’ve always loved his messages and lessons to learn that are included in the plot.

The bad guy may be done over the top, hottie latina Sofia Vergara’s character may be too annoying and other flaws this movie may have but hearing the words “Never stop doing the right thing” keeps this movie from almost being in my list for one of the worst movies of the year.
