"Al Pacino makes this a contender but not a champion"
Brian De Palma could have made Scarface into the greatest gangster epic of all time but instead Scarface is a could have been.
Acting wise Pacino delivers a performance which is both calculated and chilling but is let down by the support cast, especially Michelle Pfieffer who is dull and pan faced.
De Palma's direction makes it seem like he did not know if he wanted to make an action movie or a chilling drama. In his not knowing he lets the movie down. One of the biggest examples of this is the final scene which was so over the top, it would look right only in a Stallone action flick, not in a gangster epic.
For me, The Godfather is still the greatest gangster movie of all time.
