"The Worst Evil to Face is Evil with a Badge."
Maniac Cop is a true example of a great cult classic. A lot of people haven't seen it and some people haven't even heard of it. For a title like Maniac Cop, this film has a real deal story to it. It's not just an hack slash 80's horror movie. The director does great a job of showing the public opinions of police officers, today, and sadly, things have gotten worst. Back in the day, everybody respected police officers. They didn't even call em cops. They either said police or 'Yes officer'. Today, if your cop, you'll be lucky enough not to get your brains blown out for giving a speeding ticket. Really cops are to blame for this. The inexcusable beatings, excessive force, unjustified shootings. I'm not downing cops, actually, i wanted to be one, but decided not to join because i wanted to shoot people instead of arresting them, so i tried the army.
This could've been an excellent franchise if it wasn't for the third installment. The first sequel was just amazing. In my opinion, it was the best out of the entire franchise. Not to diss Terminator, but the police station shooting in Maniac Cop 2 was the best station shooting I've ever seen.
The only problem i had with Maniac Cop is that every single character in this movie is an absolute dumbass. The Maniac Cop, the maniac cop's girl, the captain, the police chief, even Bruce Campbell's character's a complete idiot. In fact, the only smart person in this movie is Tom Atkins character, who unfortunately, meets an unsuspecting turn of events. The Maniac Cop is too stupid to realize that he's immortal and he can do whatever he wants, so he plans this whole sneak attack against the mayor and chief, instead of just walking through the front door and blowin motherfuckers away, which he did in the sequel, that made him a real bad ass. The maniac Cop's girl is too stupid realize that that's not the Matt Cordell she used to know. The captain and chief are thee dumbest of all, but through all this stupidity this movie is still awesome.
If there's a world record for the biggest jaw in the world, Robert Z'Dar wins this, hands down. Even Kurt Russell said something about that jaw. Bruce Campbell did excellent in this, however, his love interest is Hi-D-eous. But Tom Atkins deserves all the glory in helping to make this movie great. He's a fucking legend. I call him a familiar face-actor, like Danny Trejo and Steve Buschemi. You see these guys in tons of films, either as a co-star or main character, but Tom is the king. Sad thing is he's underrated.
Every time you see this guy he's playing a cop, but my favorite role was him playing Dr. Challis in Halloween 3.
This DVD has great features. A good interview with Z'Dar with that big ass jaw. Just a good one to add in your collection.
