STAR TREK (2009)

"The Final Frontier just got even bigger."

Now this is how you get a Star Trek hater to shut up! Even if you aren't a trekkie, you can enjoy this movie to no end. But I'll get back to that in a second!

The story was excellent. But before you read on any further, I would advise that you don't on the grounds that I will be revealing a spoiler or two, okay? Anyway, I felt like they pulled off the whole older Spock and the future Romulans coming back to the time when the original star trek crew was young very well. They have rewritten the history of the Star Trek universe, without rewriting the show TOO much. And trust me, as a trekkie, I should know. Sure, there's been some stuff from the shows that has been thrown out the window, but it still works. The story was very well thought out.

And the acting talent found for this movie was amazing. Additions like Leonard Nimoy really gave us nerds something to love, too. But I did feel like Nero's role was a little overplayed and exaggerated. Isn't William Shatner supposed to fill that role? Oh yeah, he's not here.

While I'm on the subject of William Shatner, all you other nerds out there who I've heard griping about him not being in it as an older Kirk, just shut up. The older Kirk died in Star Trek Generations. So get over it. You're giving us nerds that know a bad name.

ANYWAY!!!

Now for the directing. J.J. Abrams, all is forgiven for Cloverfield. You've made up for it and have saved your reputation.

Then there are the visuals, which were, by far, amazing. And I compliment Abrams for this in knowing how to make some awesome special effects. Plus, I love how he would make ships go full-freakin'-salvo on eachother. As a trekkie, that's one problem I had with the shows and the movies. "Why are the ships and guns only firing one shot at a time? What, in the future did we forget about automatic weapons?" But this movie fixed that, with lasers flying galore.

Oh, and one more miscellaneous thing: I LOVED the inclusion of the Star Trek stereotypes into this movie:

1. Kirk seducing a green woman

2. Scottie saying "She's givin' all she's go' cap'n!"

3. McCoy saying "Damn it Jim, I'm a doctor, not a (insert seemingly random occupation here)!"

4. Death of a Red Shirt

5. The Vulcan hand symbol and "Live long and prosper."

and finally...

6. The original theme song!

So overall, this is one of the best Star Trek movies I have ever seen, not only for us trekkies, but I'm sure it will please the non-trekkies as well. Excellent work, Abrams!
