"'wow' at the first time watching, but then the 'meh' comes in."
Star Wars Episode III, the movie every fan was waiting for; the movie I was waiting for. The movie I watched a dozen of times, the movie I made music video's with, the movie I both love and hate. I love the bombastic opening, the action scène's and the great special effects; but at the same time I hate the buzz-droids, the not-really-convincing acting and I still have the feeling all the effects shouldn't belong in a Star Wars movie.
And that is what Star Wars III for me is; a great movie to watch, but also a hard one; I can't stop thinking 'it would be really cool if he had done that or changed that'.
A small explanation of my stars:
4* for the story how it is in the book and comes alive in the movie (the story how it is told by Matthew Stover in the book really adds a depth to the story in the movie) is well done. The climax didn't dissapoint me, although it wasn't really the battle I hoped for, nothing we hadn't seen before. Script was pretty poor at some points btw. (conversations between Anakin - Padmé).
Acting:
3* for the acting. Ewan McGregor is a great actor for movies like Big Fish, and is one of the better actors in this movie. Hayden Christensen did better then in Episode II, but that was to be expected; it couldn't get any worse. Natalie Portman's acting was functional, though not special. But they all lacked something, caused by the green screen I guess. It's hard to really be in a world, when you can't see it. It's hard to be outstanding when your lines are mediocre.
Directing:
Georgle Lucas did a nice job, but only because there were tons of people (his producer) who enforced some descisions. If it was up to George the whole movie would be full of Jar Jars, Ewoks and battles between midi-chlorians. Camera work is nice, although most of the credits goes to the special effects team.
Visuals:
Sometimes stunning (space battle, coruscant), sometimes very fake (Kashyyyk trees, anakin vs. Obi on the lava river). Worthy of 4 stars, it still holds up these days, although it is too much.
Overall:
3,5*
An enjoyable Star Wars, but it drowns in not-used potential.
