"Craig gives a towering performance which ranks as one of his best."
Defiance is directed by Edward Zwick and starring Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, Jamie Bell, and George McKay as four Jewish brothers from Poland who escaped Nazi persecution and fought back to rescue Jews. The next year they shelter a number of Jews and build a camp for them.
Daniel Craig plays Tuvia Bielski, the eldest of the four brothers. He gives a very strong performance that succeeds to be one of the best and most important of his career. Liev Schreiber plays Zus Bielski the second eldest brother. Tuvia and Zus have a long time sibling rivalry, and you will see why during the film. Schreiber gives an average performance. The rest of the supporting cast is also good, especially Jamie Bell.
The directing is good, not as good as some of the other Edward Zwick movies, such as Last Samurai, Blood Diamond, or Glory, but with the good story, and very good acting, the directing adds to the list. Defiance is a story about survival and bravery. It is an amazing, true story. But what Defiance is truly about is family and how important brothers and siblings really are. It may not be as true to the holocaust as Schindler's List and will never place that but still should gain recognition. A moving and powerful film, Defiance lives up to the hype and should not disappoint. Overall, Defiance is very good. I would definetly consider giving it a viewing.
It deserves it.
