"Roland Emerich's newest adventure does little to stand out from other history centered epics "
Roland Emerich is, in my eyes, a very well respected director, but his stories could be better. From Independence Day to the Day After Tomorrow, Emerich seems to be more worried about the special effects in his movies than the stories behind them. He's like Michael Bay, only he tries to somewhat make his movies make sense, but in the end, it doesn't work the way he expected.
The same can be said about 10, 000 B.C.
The stories there, as a mammoth-hunter named D'Ley tries desperately to save the one he loves, Evolet, from being a slave for the rest of her life, along with the rest of his people. Along the way he confronts sabretoothed tigers and fellow tribes, but it just seems like the movie was rushed.
I said before that Emerich seems to be more concerned with special effects, but even those weren't as good as I expected. And in the wake of 300, any movie with a history centered story, better make damn sure that it looks somewhat realistic and that it's a movie worth watching for 2 hours.
Speaking of 300, many elements of the movie seem like a knock-off of 300. For instance, when D'Ley is being chased by huge, bird-dinosaurs(that's what I call them), he gets trapped, and just as the creature is about to attack, he stabs it through the mouth with a spear, a scene erily similar to the beginning of 300 with the wolf. Also, at the end of the film, D'Ley throws a spear from a far distance to kill the supposed "god" that is enslaving his people, just as King Leonidas did to Xerxes towards the end of 300. Only in 10,000 B.C., D'Ley succeeds and kills his target.
It seems corny at times also, such as when D'Ley frees a drowning tiger and yells "If I let you free, don't eat me." What?! Now, that scene served a purpose later on, but that line was cheesy.
However, with all that said, the movie is actually entertaining and manages to get your attention so you'll watch it all, and I'm not saying don't go see it, because it is good, but if you're expecting something really original that is an epic masterpiece, get that out of your mind right now. Overall, 10,000 B.C. tries desperately to stand out in the crowd, but fails, and becomes just another movie.
AR's score: 2.5 stars(5/10)
