"A decent film"
After my first viewing of this film, I recalled a Christmas gift my father sent me one year in college, a nice lil DVD called 'Into the Blue'. My dad left a post it note saying, 'Crap movie, fun and Alba's butt can't go wrong.' I laughed pretty hard and he was right a crappy fun movie and Alba's butt.
'Fool's gold' is the same movie but much better. Mainly do to having Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey who can act, and together have a great on screen chemistry that is believable.
The 2 films have the same basic plot outline. A treasuring hunting couple on the rocks. Girl has had it with the guy, guy is broke makes deal with mob, finds part of treasure. Couple search, mob goes searching. Mob and couple fight, couple find love again and the treasure. Ha! Nothings new here folks. Same basic shit over and over and over again, but this one is better. The plot is nothing new; besides 'Into the Blue' I have seen this movie at least three other times under different titles.
Director Andy Tennant brought us Hitch which I enjoyed; he has a good eye for scenery scenes. Fool's Gold is has some very beautiful shots of Florida's coast and the Florida Keys, beautiful clear oceans sandy beaches. the movie is full of wonderful shots.
The Keys rock I love going down there. Anyway....
Matthew McConaughey plays Ben, Finnegan and Kate Hudson Tess Finnegan, who after 8 years of treasure hunting and broke bored with each other and getting a divorce. Ben in the beginning of the film accidental sinks their boat, but in the process finds a piece of the Treasure dubbed The Queen's Dowry. The treasure he and Tess have been searching for. Though they get a divorce after a relatively funny scene, where Ben has a run-in with a rapping gangster called Big Bunny of all things who owns an island, he fights off the thugs and ends up stranded out in the ocean. Rescued by some kids out drinking on a speed boat he arrives late at his divorce and loses everything, good thing he already sunk the boat. Tess is a smart very intelligent person. Through the movie she is the researcher of the team. Ben eventuals wins her back with the story of the Treausre, he finds her working on the boat of Nigel Honeycutt. Played by Donald Sutherland strolls around as Nigel Honeycutt looking more like live version of the Crypt Keeper from Tales from the Crypt, than a bored billionaire. He casual and carelessly gets involved in helping the couple to find the treasure. His lil daughter Gemma Honeycutt played by Alexis Dziena is your typical hot, dumb rich bitch, with some brains, but very little. She is fun to watch though. She gets involved in the storyline and actually uses her dizziness to the benefit of main characters and has fun in the treasure hunt and action.
Ray Winston 'Beowulf' plays another treasure hunter who knows the couple; he likes Tess way more than. He is hired by big Bunny to find the treasure before Ben and Tess.
Overall this movie is a fun romantic comedy, good laughs, beautiful scenery, and action. The acting is on point, the shots are grand and the story moves along pretty well. It's defiantly worth a watch.
