| The Lohan's misguided music video "First": The whole film can be watered down to this. | The Lohan's misguided music video "First." Don't you just want to throw her a bone (or a drumstick)? |
Herbie: Fully Loaded is, like so many others (Proof of Life, Mr. & Mrs. Smith), one of those films more notable for its off-camera shenanigans than its on-camera antics. Granted, Lindsay Lohan and Justin Long didn't have a torrid relationship (not that we know of, at least), but The Lohan's quickie change from buxom red-head to Kate Moss' bottle-blonde little sis was enough for everyone to take notice of the once-wholesome Parent Trap starlet and ask, "What's going on?" Was she anorexic? Was she doing coke? Was it that wily Wilmer Valderrama?
We'll never know.
As it stands, Herbie, a tepid story of the Love Bug's return from the junk heap,
is a barely-average family comedy that will be more remembered for its visual reminders of The Lohan we once knew - The Lohan who even made Colin Farrell pine away until she was legal - than anything else.

Featurettes: A Day at the Races, Breaking the Rules: Stunts From Herbie: Fully Loaded, Bringing Herbie To Life
Seeing the more "wholesome" side of Lindsay during the actual film is enough to make you long for the good ol' days, but you'll really get a kick out of seeing the short-lived anorexic "sing" her way through the pop music ode, "First," which honest to God bumps aside any and all decent featurettes (even the educational "Day at the Races" with a REAL race driver pales in comparison). It's a bizarre clash of old school (Herbie) and new school (Lindsay), a crazy amount of unnecessary CGI effects and some waylaid cutesy moments that fall flat. Entertaining, but sad. Very sad.
Unless you're a wide-eyed kid or an avid Us Weekly fan, there isn't too much to recommend about this novelty rental.
