"Valkyrie" is a great World War II film even if you know what the outcome will be."
"Valkyrie" is once again another World War II film. It definitely isn't the best World War II film but it still entertains. I kind of worried that this would be disappointing because of the bad buzz and how many times they changed the release date but I was not.
The film begins with two German officers trying to hatch a plot to kill Hitler. The plot is that they will give a bomb disguised as a bottle of Cointreau to Hitler. They think they succeed with the plot but they find out that the bomb never goes off. They think their cover has been compromised. Luckily they didn't find out about the bomb and they successfully retrieve it.
So to make sure that their plot goes according to plan they recruit a Nazi official. His position in the war makes him close to Hitler. They create another plot to kill him. They try many times with this plot but they have troubles and can't get close enough to Hitler. Finally they get the perfect opportunity. The bomb goes off and everyone thinks that Hitler is dead. So goes the rest of the plan. They are going to try to take over the rest of the Nazi army. But Hitler isn't dead. The rest of the film is thrilling and left me on the edge of my seat.
The story is interesting and one of World War II stories I have never heard before. Even though you know the ending, you still will be eager to see what comes next. It is a nice history lesson that may tell you a little bit about the plots to kill Hitler in World War II.
The acting is adequate but definitely not great nor realistic. All of the actors don't even try to portray German accents. But once you get past that you will still be interested in the story and will totally forget about the acting. Tom Cruise does an okay job but is over acting at times. I am happy that he didn't try to do a German accent because I am sure that would have been worse than what he did. All of the secondary actors who play the characters that are involved with the plot to kill Hitler also do a good job. They make you feel some sympathy for them once they have been compromised and have a great chance of dying.
Director Bryan Singer is excellent here. He makes the film actually look like it was World War II. He keeps you on the edge of your seat. This film could have gone many different directions but the way this one went was definitely the best. Singer really knows how to make a good film.
The visuals are terrific. The costumes are very real. The outfits look exactly like they would in that time. Like I said before the film looks like it was actually World War II. The explosions are great.
So in conclusion I recommend "Valkyrie" to any one looking for a good thriller and a quite possibly a great history lesson.

on another note, I thought Hitler was more statured and in control, and not like a crazed beast, hair out place, hunched over looking sinister, (that's what I saw from the preview), I think this portrayal was done for the movie, to get that diabolic dictator look, but I don't know I wasn't there, I just thought different.
I have to say from the preview that guy really does look like Hitler
I have a question do you think if it was another actor; it would have been an excellent movie, I think it would, because I think in most of tom cruises movies he over acts to much, Vanilla Sky and Last Samurai he was good, but I still think his best role was Lestat in Interview with a Vampire
Is the part you're talking about with the bomb, the time when the attempt on Hitler where if the bomb was on the other side of the concert table leg he would have been killed in '41(i think it was this time), that what I remember learning in high school, if it is that's interesting
Last thought, what's with rise in WWII movies?
