I have owned a DVD player since 1998, a player I payed a pretty penny for. As I built my collection from day I was lucky enough to begin building an archive of classic televisions shows that have been a part of my soul since I was born. The Twilight Zone, The X-Files shortly after, I loved collecting these shows that I held so close to my heart from the get go of the format. Of course after years of collecting you start to grow anxious for the more obscure stuff (ala Thundercats episodes!), as well as stuff you absolutely expect to be on DVD.
Well, for me Tales From the Crypt is one of the shows. A show I have been craving since day one of my DVD player making it's debut in my component rack. For years and years I waited, only to be left hanging high and dry with a few scattered "best of" compilations to hold me over until the release of an entire season.
Finally, after almost a 7 year wait, Tales From the Crypt: The Complete First Season has come to DVD. Featuring some all to classic episodes like "Dig That Cat...He's Real Gone" starring Joe Pantoliano where a man mutates his body to have the 9 lives of a cat, "Lover Come Hack To Me," a story of ghosts and skeletons in a closet of greed, and the bloody Christmas tale "And All Through The House", this first season is a treat for any gore-meister's eyes and ears.
It's funny to watch these old episodes and see a ton of rising stars who play in bigger ponds now. But with the talent of big stars aside, some of the lesser rerun episodes which tend to be a bit less classic, don't really hold up in 2005, but maybe they really didn't in the 80's either and that is what makes Tales From the Crypt such a fun ride in the first place. Nonetheless, I'm in love once again.
Tales From the Crypt is one of the most original and fun shows of all time. Fans of Halloween, haunted houses, scary stories and anything spooky will have no problem feeling right at home with a copy of the first season of this show!
I applaud Warner Home Video for finally bringing this amazing show to DVD, and music to my ears is the announcement of the release of season 2 on DVD just 7 short weeks after the show's initial debut on DVD. Bravo WHV. Bravo.
Tremendous special features are included with this set which make the price of admission worth every cent on their own. Warner Bros. have focused their attention heavily on the detail of the content which makes for the ultimate "Tales From the Crypt" experience.
A biography which spans the inception of the 1950's "Tales from the Crypt" comic-book, to it's 1989 adaptation on HBO. Interviews with the original creators are abundant as well as Senate hearing clips from the testimony of EC Comics' Bill Gaines.
Crypt Keepers History of Season One
As well, a feature aimed directly at the fans is the "Crypt Keepers History of Season One" which is stellar in every way. This one will have fans sitting pretty in their chairs sucking up all that is "Tales From the Crypt" in all it's glory.
Some easter eggs are scattered through out the menus as well which include some new sound bites from the Cryptkeeper. Like I said, detail, detail, detail...everything about this first season is all about the fans, and being one myself, I am in complete awe.
Well worth the wait? Absolutely.
If horror is your game, and blood is your crave, go out and pick up Tales From the Crypt: The Complete First Season today. It promises to satisfy any sinister earge you may have.
