MEMENTO (2001)

"Brilliant"

This is a very unique thriller. this type of movie is rarely seen. The start of the movie appears to be the end, therefore you assume it's all about reviewing the previous events to see how it relates to the opening scene. But it's not that way at all. it's shown in reverse. the movie is playing backwards. it's the kind of movie that doesn't entirely make sense until to reach the end. it's just amazing how this was filmed. there was an extensive use of foreshadow that tends to give you a "Deja Vu" feeling as the film progresses. i dont want to ruin anything, but the ending will surprise you as it surprised me. it can be a difficult movie to follow so you may need to see this a few times before you fully grasp it's message. honestly, this is one of the best revenge movies anyone will every see.

I too loved the style that this was made in, and don't think there's been another like it sense (except for on television shows [Seinfeld]). It too will be around for decades to come!

However, given that you're given the chronological ending first, and on top of the fact that it's told in reverse, Lenny has short term memory loss, so you already expect Joe Pantoliano's character to have been innocent all along, otherwise it wouldn't be very surprising, and way too predictable. Though the fact that it is predictable for him to be innocent kinda eliminates the surprise element in the film. And given that Lenny's got short term memory loss, then it's also obvious that he had to have done something to get the idea in his head that Joe's guilty, even though he's not. So for me there wasn't much suspense, and it was too predictable to watch many times over, so I didn't pick up a copy of it. Having figured this out after the first scene, and after knowing of Lenny's condition, I didn't enjoy most of the movie. Though it's still good, and unique in style.
