THE CALLER (2009)

"An oddity "

This is an oddity I must admit, what drew me to the film was Frank Langella who I thought deserved an Oscar for his role in Frost/Nixon. Also a long time favourite of mind Elliot Gould takes the other leading role.

The premise of the story is about an energy company Whistleblower Jimmy (Langella) who hires a private detective Gould, to watch his movements. Immediately this is odd, because you wonder why Jimmy has hired somebody to watch himself. This does get the curiosity factor going I must admit. We have flashbacks to 1940's France which do not make a great deal of sense in the scheme of things. But later unfolds - slowly - the story, I can't say too much or I will give it all away. Jimmy knows he is going to be killed in the next two weeks, so your immediate impression is he wants' somebody to witness this to bring the energy company down, hence the reason he hires Gould, but it is totally the wrong track.

I have to say I didn't get it at all, although I think I understood what Jimmy was doing. I could not understand why he was so keen to meet his fate. In a funny sort of way this film promises more than it delivers. Good performances by Langella and Gould, but not enough real explanation as to what had happened in the past to make Jimmy so resolutely convinced there is no other option.

Overall I think most people might find this boring, it moves slowly all the way through. It is a thriller but I am not sure it is that thrilling - mainly due to the lack of pace. What I will say is it does hold your attention and keep you intrigued. But you might be left wondering at the end whether it has been worth watching. I suppose to its credit it is nice to have a thriller than isn't all guns, car chases, blood and bullets. So in some respects it is a rarity these days, but it also a bit of an oddity as well.
