"Bale and Crowe are Blazing a Trail in Western Drama."
Westerns are probably the least favourite, besides chick flicks, of the genres in movies for me, this is mainly due to the poor writing and poor accuracy of the classic black and white westerns. Now and then though, a gem comes along like Unforgiven or Dances With Wolves that makes me change my opinion of western dramas - 3.10 To Yuma is another such western.
The movie focuses around two characters Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) and Dan Evans (Christian Bale) and the task Evans takes on by having to get the outlaw Wade to Yuma by 3.10pm to rendevous with the train that will take him to prison. This task is not easy as it sounds and with Wade's gang hot on his trail it makes for riveting drama and exciting shootouts.
The performances by both Crowe and Bale are excellent and although both men are from two seperate worlds they both respect and fear each other at the same time. There are quiet moments in the film but these are very quickly dissolved by intense frenzied shootouts that leave u thrilled and focused on what the outcome will be for the chaser and the chased by the end of the movie.
This film is superbly shot and like most modern westerns the panoramic shots presented are both inspiring and majestic and also like most great westerns an excellent supporting cast is present, in this case being anchored primarily by Ben Foster, the sharp shooting but psychotic Charlie Prince, Peter Fonda, the grizzly old road agent, Byron McElroy and Dallas Roberts, the reluctant pinkerton, Grayson Butterfield.
This is a great film to watch solo or with friends and if u are a big fan of the western genre, then this movie should undoubtably be one of your top ten must-see movies for the year.
