Former Doctor Who star Matt Smith has signed on to star in the Cross Creek Pictures' adaptation Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

The project is based on Seth Grahame-Smith's novel of the same name, which puts a horror-comedy spin on the classic Jane Austen book Pride and Prejudice. Lily James is playing Elizabeth Bennett, who is pressured by her family to marry into a wealthy home, although she decides instead to help defend her homeland from a zombie invasion. Matt Smith is playing Mr. Collins, a parson who proposes to Bennett. Sam Riley, Bella Heathcote, Jack Huston, Douglas Booth and Emma Greenwell are also set to star.

Burr Steers (Charlie St. Cloud, Emperor) is directing from an adapted screenplay he co-wrote with David O. Russell. Brian Oliver, Allison Shearmur, Sean McKittrick, Natalie Portman, Annette Savitch, Tyler Thompson and Marc Butan are producing, with shooting scheduled to begin on September 24.

Matt Smith is best known for playing the Time Lord in his four-season run on BBC's Doctor Who, which ended last year. The actor recently wrapped production on Terminator Genisys.
