Just one week after we reported that Marvel's Agent Carter star Dominic Cooper was being eyed to play Jesse Custer in AMC's Preacher, the series has cast Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Ruth Negga as the female lead Tulip. Deadline reports that the actress is the first cast member to sign on at this point. Our report from last week revealed that Dominic Cooper was the front runner to play the lead character Jesse Custer, although no formal offer has been issued yet.

Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon created the popular Preacher comic book series, which centers on Texas preacher Jesse Custer, who merges with a heavenly creature that gives him the ability to make anyone do anything he commands. After learning that God has literally abandoned his post in heaven, Jesse teams up with his ex-girlfriend and only true love Tulip (Ruth Negga) and a vampire named Cassidy to literally find God. Along the way, they encounter a lone gunman known as the Saint of Killers, whose sole purpose is to stop Jesse.

Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Sam Catlin are executive producing alongside James Weaver, Neal H. Moritz, Vivian Cannon, Ori Marmur, Ken F. Levin and Jason Netter. Sam Catlin wrote the pilot script, with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg set to direct the first episode. It isn't known when production may begin.

Ruth Negga is best known for playing Raina on ABC's Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and her big screen credits include The Samaritan, World War Z, 12 Years a Slave and last year's Jimi: All Is by My Side. She will next be seen on the big screen in Noble and Warcraft. We'll have to wait and see how this casting news affects her character Raina's arc on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., so stay tuned for more updates.
