  • During the promotion of his highly upcoming anticipated, The Ides of March, an opportunity was presented to talk with the man himself, Mr George Clooney, one of the most prestigious actors in the industry of today. We challenged our fans of Shortlist to ask question and well it comes as no surprise, everyone wants to know what Mr Clooney is about to confess.

George Clooney is criticized, slated and panned quite a bit for playing Batman in "Batman and Robin," considered as the worst film in the franchise. But many forget that the film was a big break for the actor, who was mostly known for "From Dusk Till Dawn" and "ER" at the time.

TotalFilm now caught up with the actor to find out why he took the role. He said: "The truth is, my phone rang, and the head of Warner Bros said, 'Come into my office, you are going to play Batman in a Batman film.' And I said, 'Yeah!' I called my friends and they screamed and I screamed and we couldn't believe it!"

Clooney continued: "The last one had been successful, so I thought I was just going to be in a big, successful franchise movie. [And] in a weird way I was. Batman is still the biggest break I ever had and it completely changed my career, even if it was weak and I was weak in it. It was a difficult film to be good in. I don't know what I could have done differently. But if I am going to be Batman in the film 'Batman and Robin,' I can't say it didn't work and then not take some of the blame for that."

"Batman and Robin" went on to gross $238 million on a $125 million budget, and Clooney was immediately cast in such films as "Out of Sight" and "Three Kings," making him a Hollywood star.

I've never hated Clooney for B&R, but rather Schumacher and his screenwriters. They decided that it was a good story, and to add those rubber nips, and to give Arnold all of those horrible puns. Having Chris O'Donnell play Robin, the Boy Wonder, was another bad Schumacher decision, but that goes back to BF. In short, Clooney did the best he could in a truly bad situation.

As for favorite Clooney film, I haven't seen them all, but Out Of Sight still remains my favorite film of his. That may be because of the fact that it is based on an Elmore Leonard novel.

  • He's great in everything, but I gotta go with O Brother, Where Art Thou? as my favorite Clooney movie and performance; I also consider it to be his best.
Yeah, well, ya know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

  • @ejk1: I'm glad you pointed that out. Typically it's the screenwriters, director, and the studio who greenlit the project whom are at fault. Not the actors who work with what they're given. Granted that's not mutually exclusive to all films like this, as some actors clearly bomb or don't even try. But in films like 'B&R' it was pretty clear Schumacker was at fault. He even formally apologized for the film, claiming his only intent was to entertain, and that he was following the similar childish motif of 'Forever' which to me gets an unwarranted amount of praise. It only receives it cause 'B&R' bombed big time, but it was really bad too. From Two-Face being a joker ripoff to Riddler being just JC playing himself in a green suit rather than the character, that film had plenty of flaws too. At least in 'B&R' they adapted the tragic aspect of Mr. Freeze, thus adding more dimensions to an already flat character.
You think Pike and Sykes haven't been watchin' us. They know what this is all about - and what do I have? Nothin' but you egg-suckin', chicken stealing gutter trash with not even sixty rounds between you. We're after men - and I wish to God I was with 'em
