Zack Snyder Talks Watchmen Ending and Trailers

Zack Snyder has been buried up to his eyeballs working on Watchmen, but not so busy that he hasn't been able to talk about the film. Recently he sat down with Dark Horizons to discuss the movie, including specifics about the movie's ending, music used in the film and when we can see more trailers.

Regarding trailers, Snyder confirms that the next trailer will be attached to the release of Quantum of Solace, and that this trailer will provide a few more hints to the story of the film. Snyder says "I just saw the final version of it this morning... it's a little bit more story, a teeny bit more like a full trailer. This is much more like 'someone's picking off costume heroes'. You'll get a sense of the characters plight you know, 'we were supposed to make the world a better place... what happened to the American Dream'." Snyder also said that a third trailer should hit shortly after the new year.

Choosing an appropriately period soundtrack has been something of a joy for Snyder, he revealed. "That part is super fun, I love the exercise of having to go through the book and find songs from pop culture that fits scenes" he says. One song that gets a brief inclusion is 1984's '99 Luftballons' by Nena which he had to justify to one clueless onlooker - "someone said to me like 'I don't get why you put that song in the movie', and I said 'you know that song's about these red balloons getting away and causing nuclear war' and they're like 'Oh...huh'." Other songs that Snyder included in the soundtrack are Bob Dylan's "Desolation Row" and "All Along the Watchtower", Simon & Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence", Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable", and at least one number by Nina Simone.

Finally, Snyder addressed the somewhat controversial ending to the film, which in the comics involved a gigantic, genetically engineered psychic squid creature. The film version replaces that part of the plot with a series of atomic explosions that turns society against the superhuman Dr. Manhattan. Some fans of the comic have been upset about the change, which Snyder is somewhat amused by. "The fans, god love 'em, they're all up in arms about the squid. What they should be up in arms about are things like shooting the pregnant woman, 'God is real and he's American', whether THAT's in the movie. That's my point of view, maybe I'm crazy." He does admit that the ending scenes with the main characters remain, as does the 'moral imperative' of the comic's ending.

It all begins with the paranoid delusions of a half-insane hero called Rorschach. Well I kinda wished they would have stuck with the original ending. But i like the idea of him setting up Doctor Manhattan. Nice.

Let's put it this way ComradeHenson. I've read the novel too (a dozen times, i think) And it has something "hilarious" About it... The DC Comics editor in charge of Watchmen hated the ending, probably because of the crazy nature of Alan Moore's mind (which i love) But... It will probably end up like Spider-Man! Who wnats to see a loser making a mixture of chemicals to create a fluid thar can make him swing builidings? (he doesn't have a PhD)So, let's see what happens... I'm still looking forward to it as one of the greatest graphic novel adaptations of all time (see Miller's disaster on The Spirit and you'll get my point) So. I suggest ComradeHenson to chill out and join all those happy fans of Watchmen out there :)

Gosh... This movie looks SO, SO COOL.

I'm a purist in a lot of ways, but as long as whatever they go with in the movie has the same meaning as the book, I'll at least be "not pissed".
I just love seeing giant terrifying monsters...

    dammit.

Never read the novel, but "gigantic, genetically engineered psychic squid creature" doesn't sound like something I want to see anyway, so I'll probably be happy with the ending. Can't wait for this movie.

GaiusBaltar, shut the f*ck up. First of all, Watchmen came before the New Battlestar, and yes I mean that the song was featured in the book from 1986-87.
The "Watchtower" used in BG was a cover as well, and an overly dramatic one at that.
If anything, themes in Battlestar are drawn from other, more relevant works.

I still think he's bluffing about the squid...
But even if he isn't, it doesn't sound half bad. At least the point will get across. And who knows, 4-hour directors cut, remember?

Yes. Can't wait for the trailers or movie.
And he sort of has a point about the good dark lines more than the squid. Whatever happens it will be good.
"We're all puppets, Laurie. I'm just a puppet who can see the strings."
    Man, those lines are great.

Glad to hear the trailer attached to "QoS" won't be the one used at the scream awards. Can't wait.

His point of view on the squid is...unique, i guess you could say. It sounds like he's focusing more on the little parts than the big ones, and watchmen's story does stem from a lot of the little things and doesn't necessarily revolve around the "big things." That's why it's so complex, there's lots of detail. I just hope it works. Still my most anticipated for next year
