Zachary Levi to Star in Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakuel

Zachary Levi (star of NBC's action comedy series Chuck) has signed on to star opposite the computer-generated singing rodents of Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakuel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Betty Thomas is directing the follow-up to Fox 2000 and Regency's 2007 hit Alvin and the Chipmunks, which grossed $217 million in North America.

Levi will play the cousin of Jason Lee's character and gets tangled up with the tiny animated threesome. Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler and Jesse McCartney again will provide the chipmunks' voices.

Also new to the franchise will be the Chipmunks' rivals, the Chipettes -- Brittany, Jeanette and Eleanor -- who were introduced in the 1980s animated TV series.

No production date has been set.

Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Squeakuel was released December 23rd, 2009 and stars Zachary Levi, David Cross, Jason Lee, Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler, Jesse McCartney, Amy Poehler, Anna Faris. The film is directed by Betty Thomas.

    The 2007 movie was cute and with grossing that much I can see why they would do a 'squeakuel'. I agree Vamp, great taglines and the Chipmunks have always been for kids haven't they?

    sweet! can't wait - hope there's some more mocha jokes! lol can't wait for this movie, but hope they change the absolutely ridiculous name "The Squeakuel" - LAME! Almost as bad as the catchphrase for the first movie - "get munked!"

    YAY! The first "Alvin and the Chipmunks" movie was awesome, and one of the funniest things I've seen. "Alvin and the Chipmunks" was always one of my all time favorite shows, and when I heard they were doing a movie about it back in 2007, I was worried at them casting that idiot from "My Name is Earl." However, after seeing the movie finally, I was VERY pleased with his performance, as well as with everything else about the movie. One of my favorite aspects of the movie, was Alvin, Simon, and Theodore's rivals: Brittany, Jeanette, and Eleanor, A.K.A. The Chipettes! I'm glad to hear they're introducing them, and I can't WAIT to hear more on this one!
