Zac Efron to Join Jonny Quest

L.A. Times has just confirmed that High School Musical star Zac Efron will indeed have a starring role in Warner Bros.' live-action adaptation of the popular '60s Hanna-Barbera cartoon Jonny Quest.

The star is signing on for a new type of role to steer away from the youth-pop genre. There is also speculation that Warner Bros. is considering changing the name of the film to bypass certain negative association with Warner Bros.' big screen failure Speed Racer, also an adaptation of a popular cartoon.

Rumor has it that Andy Fickman and Dwayne Johnson are circling the project.

No production date has been set.

There IS no association with the SPEED RACER and JOHNNY QUEST cartoons!
"RACER" was a joke when it came out and "QUEST" was awesome.

I'm still waiting to see him in Me and Orson Wells, but only because Richard Linklater directed it. Anyway, not sure about this.

I don't assume this will be a musical, i've seen him star in a film role where he wasn't singing and he's actually got potential.

F*ck this writer. Speed Racer was a great movie. Accurate reporting would have said "financial failure"

F*ck this movie too. Johnny Quest is good nostalgia, but it was a terribly made show. Unless they make this movie with a tongue-in-cheek attitude, it will be awful. I'm not asking for Venture Bros. level comedy here, but I just want them to be honest with themselves about the film they are making and its source material.

I love when people assume that just because Efron starred in HSM that everything he'll be in will be a musical. I'm no fan and he's far a "great actor"(seriously, what orifice did you pull that out of?), but give him a break...you'd jump at the chance to be in a musical if it meant millions of dollars and the chance to grope Vanessa Hudgens and Ashely Tisdale, too. As for Johnny Quest, I really don't give a sh*t. As for Johnny Quest, it can either go two ways: it could be a surprise hit, or an epic fail, both critically and in box office. I'm not familiar with the show that much, but I know it was more of a "serious" cartoon than most others of the time period. With Efron and Johnson, I don't know how it can be that serious. I mean, I like Johnson. I think he's a better actor than people give him credit for. However, in this setting, I'm seeing a cheesy attempt at making a kids movie that's supposedly not for kids. I'll be waiting for the actual movie to see if Efron gets his "serious role" wish.

Wait wait let me get this straight.....

"The star is signing on for a new type of role to steer away from the youth-pop genre."

You want to get off projects that are circled around young youth, so you sign up to a project which is based upon a kids cartoon.

Oh yeah that really makes sense, congratulations.
