Yellow Submarine Sinks at Disney Due to Mars Needs Moms' Poor Box Office Performance

Yellow Submarine will not move forward at Disney
The Robert Zemeckis project Yellow Submarine has been cut loose at Disney, which is the result of Mars Needs Moms opening with just $6.9 million at the box office this past weekend. Mars Needs Moms was produced with a $150 million production budget.

Robert Zemeckis served as a producer of Mars Needs Moms, and now the filmmaker must seek another studio home for his remake of the classic movie starring The Beatles.

The director had already assembled a cast for Yellow Submarine back in January of 2010, with Cary Elwes, Peter Serafinowicz, Adam Campbell, and Dean Lennox Kelly slated to star. There have been virtually no updates on the project since that news broke, although Yellow Submarine had been plagued with problems with the budget and a December start date was scrapped and never rescheduled.

The plan was said to use motion-capture technology which Robert Zemeckis used in Beowulf, Disney's a Christmas Carol, and Mars Needs Moms. 16 songs from The Beatles were to be used in the movie.

Now Robert Zemeckis is free to take the project to another studio.

Yellow Submarine is in development and stars Cary Elwes, Peter Serafinowicz, Adam Campbell, Dean Lennox Kelly. The film is directed by Robert Zemeckis.

Seeing how great all of his other movies were, I think it's crazy to see Disney hating on Zemeckis with just one failure. I thought Beowulf & A Christmas Carol were simply awesome, not to mention all the other money makers he's made over the years! Another studio might actually be a good thing for him though.

Not to mention the fact that 3D would be as amazing in this as it would in a first-person shooter version of Doom.

I'm somewhat surprised at the backlash Zemckis is getting both from Disney and in this thread. So Mars Needs Moms sucked. Who didn't realize that after watching the trailer? Surely to folks at Disney must've known as well, which is why I'm surprised at their apparent surprise.

Two things: If anybody is entitled to a flop here and there, it's a guy like Zemeckis who has, I think, afforded himself that luxury based on his previous success. The other thing - and I agree w/ @stiles on this - The Beatles is a brand that sells itself. Zemeckis could have a million flops; A movie about the Beatles would sell, regardless.

Thank God! Love The Beatles and Yellow Submarine is a time capsule classic. No need to do it again.
Zemeckis been at this mo-cap for the longest. All films done by him sucked. Polar,Beo, etc. then Cameron blew the roof off the technology. He should go back to real film. Mars Moms creepy, how about just plain dark. Who's idea with a dark blue color scheme thru the whole picture anyways? Seth Green has final laugh. Good,..

thats because mars needs moms looked f*ckin stupid. so stupid that kids didnt even want to see it. and the world doesn't need another 'we love the beatles' project anyway. this is and was totally unnecessary. this would bomb at the box office too.

They didn't need to remake this anyway.

@Monkey-iron instead of passing judgment, you should research Yellow Submarine first.

As far as this story goes, I'm somewhat impressed by the stand Disney is making, but I do wonder if they will do the same to Marvel. Disney paid a lot of money for the comic giant, but if, for example, The Avengers, performs below expectations and does not make a profit, then will they pull the plug on future movies? Interesting stuff.

Some times a person gets stuck on something becouse they either find it a safe place, or interesting. But this epic failure shows Zemeckis that he should not stay in one line of movie making just due to his personal intrest, couse it might not translate to the paying public. I personaly liked the christmas carol film, and Beowulf was good, but not great. But if he wants to do motion capture, he should act like milton bradly and get a Clue, and go for the Avatar type look and feel.

Damn, this was about the first film i thought might actually be enhanced by 3D. Denied.

The Beatles as a brand would obviously fare match better than a crappy, americanised title Like Mars Needs Moms. The studio should grow a pair and push this forward.

@dan1 This road he has chosen has always baffled me. Its one thing to be intruiged with a new way of filmmaking.

But you know what? Cameron did it better...with Avatar so move on. Another ghost movie or something simple to get you back in the game Robert then give us one more genius piece of film making before you die.

@dan1 agreed Zemeckis should just go back to live action and also this film has Cary Elwes attached to it! Nice to see him as a real person sometime on the big screen

Man, these Digital Movers movies are creepy to look at and unsettling. I took my kids to see Mars Needs Moms this last weekend and felt very uncomfortable thru the entire thing. Sorry, Zemeckis, I agree with the others here...please go back to your more successful medium and abandon this uncanny crap. :(

@dan1 EXACTLY!!! How do you go from doing the Back to the Future films, Forrest Gump and Cast Away to doing nothing but this motion capture crap?

Goddamnit, just go back to live action, Zemeckis. You do so much better in that medium. Leave the motion capture alone already.
