Producer Bryan Singer reveals major details of X-Men: First Class
Producer Bryan Singer checked in with Ain't It Cool News today and revealed several new details about X-Men: First Class, with the major update being that the film will take place in the 1960s.

The film will show us how James McAvoy's Professor Xavier and Michael Fassbender's Eric Lehnsherr/Magneto first meet and discuss their similar goals of mutants and humans living together as one. Singer revealed that Xavier won't be in a wheelchair throughout the film, although it will show how he comes to be in the wheelchair.

Singer also said that, since the film will be set in the 60s before the original comic books, characters such as Scott "Cyclops" Summers and Jean Grey won't be in the film, although Summers' brother, Alex a.k.a. Havoc, will be in the film, played by Lucas Till.

It was also revealed that Kevin Bacon's villain character will in fact be Sebastian Shaw, which means that, along with the addition of January Jones as Emma Frost, the film will also feature The Hellfire Club, which Singer said was being added since the film will be set in the party atmosphere of the 60s.

Singer also revealed that there will be more characters in the film that have not been revealed yet. @Faintpresence Because it all falls back to that almighty dollar. No studio is going to say "our movie sucks, don't go see it". Hell, even the worst of the worst (Battlefield Earth), they will still try to find something good to say about it. If you read the back of the VHS box of Battlefield Earth (yes I own a copy, no, do not ask why... but it WAS just a dollar lol), it states that it had extremely cool special effects, and you got to see John Travolta in a role as you've never seen him lol. The movie was maybe the most god awful tripe I've ever sat through, and yet someone somewhere was spinning it as worth your time.

I would suggest you just keep a closer tab on reviews with sites such as rotten tomatoes and certain people's reviews here to stay well informed and know what to avoid.

Why doesn't this site show the number of thumbs down? It's like how movies advertise. They say how much a movie made in the theater, but never ask or say if anyone really liked it. Which can only show that the commercial did what it was designed to do and got a lot of people into the theater, But how many people walked out? Why is every movie number one in the country? Also how can anyone compare a new movie's quality over an old one through it's profits when more theaters are constantly going up all over, the population keeps growing, and the prices at the theater keeps going up? Lastly why aren't there any commercials that tell that a movie sucks and to not go see it for specific reasons. I miss the days of the professional film critics.

  3. The Narrator: The Better Man

@ejk, you misunderstood my post. I was trying to prove how little of a fan he really was, until he found something pertaining in the comics to him. And even then, he screwed with the continuity. X-Men was decent with X2 being great, but still, not quite the movies we wanted.

So Professor X has hair and walks in the film. In the comics the prof had lost all his hair by the time he was in college. He was paralyzed while fighting Lucifer years before finding Scott (the first x-man) and deciding to form a team. Pretty early in the comics the prof. built mechanical leg braces that allowed him to walk. His whole problem was that he felt like half a man because he couldn't walk and pretty much only pondered on that. He was even in love with Jean but felt that she couldn't love a cripple.

@Fallen, I don't care about Singer's private life. He can do what or whomever he wants as far as I'm concerned. That's his private life. However, his private life should not leak into his professional life. Just because the mutants may have something in common with him doesn't excuse the distorted version of X-Men he created.

  8. The Narrator: The Better Man

Singer was still an up-and-coming fan at the time he made the fist two X-Men. After all he was only fully interested in it when he grasped that idea of the mutants as outcasts in society, which he felt was relateable to his homosexuality. So he isn't as big a fan as some make him out to be. Quite similar to Bay getting a crash course of Transformers mythology right before filming.

Ah comics... I love them. Great stories of Marvel. Many others love them too. The comic readers bought the comics and this kept marvel going. More comics and more readers. Later some of these comics became great phenomenons thanks to the growing number of customers who wanted to read these comics. These comics turned into cartoons and video games later, and then movies. Woa there came x-men. A piece of garbage to the readers that had paid into the industry. A let down, a slap to the face. If the readers had not bought those comics then the story would have died in the 60's. So why not make a movie for those readers. Something that says "thank you for following this story for half a century, here is some of it on the big screen". It would be everything better than a movie by someone who is not affiliated with the comic, or respects the story that paid it's own way into history. Why make a movie for the point of tying to bring new fans into the mix when there are so many already? If this new fan likes the movie it doesn't mean that they will even like the originator, the comic series, a very different version of the story. After all, this is a very long, detailed, and old story. If you change the details of a story then it's no longer the story at all. If so then calling it the x-men is copyright infringement.

I have a theory, I think singer hates comics, I agree that history is not copy and paste the
comics, but leave out items such as Cyclops leader of the x-men first class, is something completely stupid

    2 years agoby @enockFlag

  11. gandoff2169

The idea of the main plot sounds good, but to have Havok as a main character and not Cyclops is stupid. Anyone whoo knows comics knows that in X-men, Cyclops was "The" main X-man out side of the Professor... So Singer who did well for the first two X-men movies, might do a miss if he dose a movie like this to fans...

For a long time I only knew about certain superheroes. during the 90's I discovered the X-Men and quite a number of other superheroes.
Regarding the X-Men films, I found they weren't team related nor did they help a lot in the missions. Just talk and very little action.
Wolverine only had five good minutes before it turned to garbage.
So far I've only been impressed with Iron-man and Spiderman films, Hulk I liked both versions.
I'm just hoping that it can be turned around for the rest of the heroes. The mutant films need a good rest for a while, I say five to seven years without X-Men films.

I liked Dead Pool before I watched Wolverine. Sure hope it's better handled than Wolverine.

The Mime Agrees with you. At first I thought it would turn out great, but when the movie came out it just sucked. Thrown everything way off-course with the scrappy lines and wacky storyline and those low-budget moves looking like they're from one of those "Dummies" books...yeah, like that. Character wise was cool, though one thing that ruined the movie, at least for me, is just too much character and they ended up killing everyone to make the story fit with the first X-men film. Overall, it's a movie that I could watch, but once is just enough for a long time.

that 5 minutes is all i needed to see... im a huge deadpool fan

it was pretty stupid what they did at the end with him, but i expected that because they have ruined almost everything in the x-men franchise as far as im concerned

...but Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool for five minutes. Then they turn him into Weapon XI where he doesn't even talk...the MERC WITH A MOUTH doesn't have a mouth. I think Wolverine and Last Stand are pretty much on the same level, where as X2 is at the top with X-Men right behind it.

@Messenger, Scott's not in this, but his younger brother is. Any chance of a relationship between Scott and Emma is gone. Jean Grey, the reason the Hellfire Club has for being in the X-Universe, is not there. @Comrade is right. I don't need a movie that is shot for shot from the comics, but the movies should have characters that retain the qualities and personalities that their comic counterparts possessed. In this movie series, that has not been the case for many mutants. You like the movies as they are, and that's fine. You also don't read the comics, which is also fine. Just don't sit there and act like you know what everyone is talking about, when you clearly do not.

I'M not saying it has to mimic the comics exactly but how about a little continuity in there own films. Cyclops is not my favorite X-Men but when they say the reason why he's not in this movie is because it's in the 60's it pisses me off since Emma was in Origins & so was Scott & they where the same age.

I would be ok with this if this was a reboot but it's in the same world as the other 4 films

This has to be the sh*ttiest argument I've ever seen:
"If you want the comics, go read the comics."

You assume that all people who complain about source dissonance are purist *ssholes who want a shot-for-shot reproduction, when in reality, all they want is for the filmmakers to have an iota of respect for the history and definition of the character's they're dealing with.

Think of any property you care about. Now imagine every character has been aged forward or backward by 20 years at random, and have different biographical details. In fact, the only thing connecting them to their roots is the fact that they have *kind of* the same powers. Can your favorite fictional character be defined by what special effects it takes to animate them? If so, you're a simp, and if not, shut the f*ck up.

@iambatman: The first two were great, especially X2...fantastic movie.

I'm looking forward to this movie. I'm a little disappointed it won't feature the original five, but I think this should just be labeled a reboot. I don't know how they expect us to buy that this is a prequel when Emma Frost is featured, but it takes place in the 60s. She was rather young in the Wolverine movie, which featured a post-crippled Prof. X...and he's not crippled yet in this film. Soooo...unless Emma's powers include time travel now, they should just call this a reboot or admit that Wolverine was so bad that they're not even including it in the continuity anymore.

  25. Mutant

The X-Men is a group of mutants that have banded together under Pro.X leadership. What I can't get around the fact that Singer and Ratner couldn't even make it a team effort film. As we all know the first two X-men films were about Wolverine and nothing else. Singer just threw in the X-Men as extras, he needed Logan to talk to someone, well that's what I got from it.
Ratner on the other hand tried and failed in the attempt.
What I'm getting at is Singer doesn't know how a team functions and neither does Ratner, the fewer the characters the better any film is for both of them.
Josh Wedon is taking on the Avengers but he knows about teams and how they work 'Buffy the Vampire slayer'. I've always felt that he would have been the better choice to lead films like this.

A director that knows about teams is the only way to go. I've noticed that directors don't get auditioned, they need to badly.

I have a question, if Emma Frost appears in this film, who was
diamond girl then protects Cyclops in the film
wolverine?, we can say that wolverine is not tied to this
timeline, although according to the cast, plays Emma Tozzi Tahyna
    frost.

Cyclops is not one of my favorite characters, but it is the leader
the first class ever, and today is the marvel universe
the leader of the mutant race, for me this film was
opportunity to go to scott summers on and say that he is the future leader of the x-men.

if you are not supposed to make these movies is for us fans
marvel universe, not a fool to come and make the
    first sh*t I think

You gotta be kidding me. I thought that Bryan Singer had destroyed the x-men forever. I guess he needed to do more damage to them. THIS IS THE WORST THING THAT COULD EVER BE DONE TO THEM!!!! A prequel that screws up the entire time line. Professor x knowing Magneto wasn't written into the comics until way later. It wasn't the original plot. THE HELL FIRE CLUB? The Emma Frost trend needs to die. The first 2 X-men movies were about wolverine and the "x-men" were extras in the background. Which one character is he gonna make this one about? He's already making up a fake team that never existed. HAVOK WASN'T EVEN INTRODUCED UNTIL THE END OF THE FIRST TEAM. Movie remakes and old story rewrites are CRAP!!!!! Bryan Singer makes CRAP!!!!!!

  29. The Narrator: The Better Man

@Mast_Chiefed, I see how you want to expand the mutant universe, but the universe is already so jumbled and messed up. If you add Apocalypse and Sinister, and cable etc in movies to come... it's only gonna get more and more complicated. And on the off chance that those movies are good, they would still just add to the continuity confusion. I feel like you just want to see characters, and awesome story arcs on screen, without caring about proper character treatment, or common audiences. The franchise needs help, and if you refuse to see that then... you can't possibly be a fan.
