Here is what director Rich Moore said about the addition of this character and the possible Wreck-It Ralph 2.
"At dinner last night we were already talking about 'What could they do? What kinda of things could happen? Who could be in it? We'll really come up with something good for Mario to do. To be able to present him in the sequel, that would be great."
John C. Reilly, who voiced Ralph, also added that the studio was already discussing the follow up.
"Some of the big muckety-muckets at the studio, who I just saw the other night, were like 'We're talking sequel! The movie made $150 million dollars in eleven days, it broke the box-office record for Disney animated movies on opening weekend. If that's any indication that we'll be doing a sequel...I bet we'll be doing a sequel."
The animated comedy has already brought in $200 million worldwide and still has premiere dates in a number of countries.
Wreck-It Ralph was released November 2nd, 2012 and stars John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch, Alan Tudyk, Mindy Kaling, Joe Lo Truglio, Ed O'Neill. The film is directed by Rich Moore.

A mario movie in the same spirit as a pixar movie would be great,

I'd be down for a CGI Mario movie.

With CGI, a Mario film would probably be a lot easier to make than the one from twenty years ago. But I think Zelda and Metroid offer better movie possibilities.

Sounds like a great idea that would obviously do well with numbers.

Agreed, fellas. A cool standalone Mario movie, done in the same vein as Wreck it Ralph, would be definitely be a monumental success. The question is whether or not Nintendo will go for it.

@thedude-abides Although I would prefer another studio doing it. Just me, no reasons why

SherlockHolmes2009
@felipe-11 Agreed, that would be a better choice than putting him in a sequel. Maybe theyll introduce him and give him his own movie

A "Wreck-It Ralph" Sequel...why!?. Pointless!

They should make a movie about Mario (CGI, not like that 90s disaster)

Guess they are depending on the other foreign markets to bump up the gross number. So far they are shy of 30 million to break even
