William Monahan Will Direct The Associate

Paramount has set The Departed writer William Monahan to adapt John Grisham's bestselling legal thriller The Associate, in which Shia LaBeouf will star.

According to Variety, the studio acquired rights to the novel late last year. Di Bonaventura and LaBeouf sparked to the notion of doing it together after reading the book in galley form while they were on the set of Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen. The novel was published in January by Random House.

LaBeouf will play a Yale Law School student with a sordid secret that leaves him vulnerable to blackmail. He's manipulated into taking a job at a law firm and working on a multibillion-dollar lawsuit.

No production date has been set.

    Definitely, Shelly.
This one ended without a great conclusion. He built the detailed plot up to the rim and just as it began to boil over, Grisham turned off the burner. With such a hanger, he made it seem like a sequel might follow, but knowing Grisham... THE END.

Personally, I'd like to see the Street Lawyer.

There hasn't been a John Grisham adaption in a while. This could be good.

I haven't read this book, but there are several of John Grisham's books that the ending fell flat in my opinion. If this is one of them I hope they redo the ending for the film.

The book was okay, but I didn't like the ending.
WIlliam Monaham seems to be all over upcoming film news as a potential director; and Shia Labeouf fits the role exactly. Could turn out good...
