Will Smith May Officially Be Set for Independence Day Sequels

Independence Day sequels closer than ever
Independence Day sequels closer than ever
IESB.net is reporting that 20th Century Fox is moving forward with the sequel for Independence Day with actor Will Smith.

Recently, writer/producer Roland Emmerich [said] Fox just wasn't willing to cut their teeth over the list price for one Will Smith. Being the only movie-star in the world (an actor who guarantees asses in seats), Smith gets $20 million up front plus first dollar gross. That alone has stopped the studio cold from moving forward. Until now it seems.

IESB.net has received a tip that Will Smith is now locked for not only Independence Day 2, but also a third installment. The plan would be to shoot both films back-to-back. According to our sources, if all goes according to plan, the sequel(s) could shoot as early as 2011.

Director Roland Emmerich is currently slated to helm his William Shakespeare thriller, Anonymous, while actor Will Smith is leaning towards The City That Sailed or Men in Black 3. Could this be the next project for both? Only time will tell.

The original film brought in a total of $817,400,891 in worldwide box office receipts.

Stay tuned for more production info on what Emmerich purposed to call the sequels: ID4-ever: Part I and ID4-ever: Part II.

Independence Day 2 is in development and stars Will Smith. The film is directed by Roland Emmerich.

Independence Day 3 is in development and stars Will Smith. The film is directed by Roland Emmerich.

Well someone has been drinking a bit too much. I don't stand against the devil nor serve him, I like to be out of his path. Just kidding.
None of those people are part of a secret SOCIETY, did you snoot up to fast or something because you sound paranoid.

Yeah Knight. 2012 dialog left much to be desired. Liked the effects, but it was kind of like "When Worlds Collide", but without the payoff.

I hope this happens. Smith is great as this character. He owns it. As long as they get all of the original cast back, so it doesn't feel like an afterthought, it should be great. And hopefully they come up with something other than a lame plot that has them planting a virus into an alien computer, which they barely understand the workings of.

That will be awesome with the CGI today...the only problem is what are they're going to ruin next? they already ruined everything in the 1st one.

i'm with @Mmm_mmm about the dialogue. waste of time. not really sure where they can go with ID2? we'll see. story and dialogue, however, have GOT to improve drastically, though.
question: how is ID2, ID3, MIB3, Hanc*ck 2 AND a Shakespeare flick gonna be made? something gonna give... bet it's MIB3 if this report proves true.

Dialogue isn't really a problem here. At least not for Smith's character. Wasn't like 80% of his dialogue in the first one JUST catchphrases? One liners.

I could see this being good, as they have planned this for a while.

But all us movies fans know that we've been hurt before by franchises starting up again after a long break.

I'm still waiting for Bad Boys 3, Independence Day 2? Didn't see it coming. Isn't I Am Legend 2 still happening? Men In Black 3? The City That Sailed sounds pretty cool. Will Smith seems to have a lot on his plate before he reaches 50.

If this is true then so be it, all I ever wanted for Will to do is BB3 and MIB 3. If he's truly up to this I'll watch it, but 20 million that is just greedy.

If someone asked me to come back for a film, I would come back without asking for more money. It's just wrong for any actor, Will's films now are too fluffy. Good Fluffy, but still Fluffy isn't all ways good.

This sounds intresting that Will Smith is still intrested in doing ID2 with posibiltes of doing a 3rd back to back they will have to get Roland Emmerich involved of course for these films to be any sucsses. Will Smith should get back to doing somthing gung ho again.

    1. I'll see anything Will Smith does
    2. I'' see anything Roland Emmerich does (yeah maybe you hate him, but he's still one of my favorite directors)
    3. Independence Day is one of all-time favorites and although I never saw it as a film that could have sequels I'm down if they do it
    But....
    4. Fox needs to get minimal input on this... they are seriously screwing everything up these days... except for Avatar

Haha. Sorry, can't enjoy mindless garbage. Just not in me. And I ain't fooled by it. Same reason I don't waste my time on movies like Saw, or any other cheese that comes out of Hollywood for the almighty buck. There are just funner movies out there in my opinion. Movies that are made cheesy on purpose... they know what they are, and they aren't bogged down by sh*tty dialog to try and bring some emotion to so empty characters that I want to die in the first 5 minutes anyway. But hey, some people like that crap. And some people like and watch ONLY that stuff. Which is fine I guess... just makes guys like me have to be more selective... and knowing what I know, I gotta be cautious about who's opinion I trust. Like I said, 2012 was so bad in my eyes it made me mad. It was mind-numbing. But if that's your bag, get a big f*ckin spoon a dig in, just don't put anyone down for calling 2012 EXACTLY what 2012 is. Hell, even 2012 knows what it is. :)

If you want popcorn movies, check out Clash of the Titans, check out Star Trek, hell even Avatar was a big budget popcorn flick. There is such a thing as watching movies for fun, but those movies actually having some substance and quality. Sh*t, even a movie like Drag Me to Hell, I love to death, is cheesy as hell, but it's awesome, because it doesn't pretend to be something it's not. So you're not bogged down in some diluted storyline with loads of dialog that no human on this planet would ever say. But hey, to each his own! if you can escape in the garbage, more power to you.

And as far as IESB? Your statement really has no validity. Those guys have broken loads of stories of the last few years that came to pass, and had Variety and The Hollywood Reporter and everyone else quoting what they found. Why? They're semi-in bed with the head of Fox, that's why. Who's doing these movies? Fox. Respect bitch!
