Will Smith Clarifies Oldboy Remake

Oldboy
Oldboy
There's been much talk about the Oldboy remake, set to star Will Smith with Steven Spielberg directing, and Smith recently had something to say about his new project. Film School Rejects caught up with Smith at the premiere of Seven Pounds, where Smith indicated that the film is not a straight-up remake of the original Chan-wook Park film.

We're looking at that right now. Not the film though, it's the original source material. There's the original comics of 'Oldboy' that they made the first film from. And that's what we're working from, not an adaptation of the film...," said Smith.

The article goes on to say that Spielberg didn't purchase the rights to the original film, but he picked up the rights to the comic books. We'll certainly keep you posted on any developments surrounding this new film.

Oldboy was released March 25th, 2005 and stars Min-sik Choi, Ji-tae Yu, Hye-jeong Kang, Dae-han Ji, Dal-su Oh, Byeong-ok Kim, Seung-Shin Lee, Jin-seo Yun. The film is directed by Chan-wook Park.

I agree with J.A outlaw, and Mr. Monk I dont like Speilberg, anymore, after he stop directing the Jurassic park series, and have some one else do his job, Jp3 was alright but would have been better if he directed, and the Indian Jones movie was sub-par, I also agree somewhat with Johnny Blaze, Will smith is good in comedies, not action, and he really, really wouldnt fit the role in this movie, and by the way I thought Oldboy was alright, but the negativity overpowered the movie, so its not the good in my book

I'm not sure which worries me more. Smith or Speilberg. Smith is a one-act wonder and is 'Will Smith' in every film he does. Lets see him eat a live squid.
Speilberg, great as he is at what he does, can't do dark.
I hope they prove me wrong.

Moviemaster? What are you talking about? Your comment doesn't make any sense in correlation with what I said. "black person plays a white person" - that's great information, but what does it have to do with, I don't know, anything. Try to read before you write, dipsh*t.

So no offense but F*ck you moviemaster

*tisk tisk tisk* 27 club, you're new so i won't go hard on ya:

1: The last time a "black person plays a white person" well it was a white person who played a black person (Tropic Thunder) that movie studio was sued becasue they thought it was racist for it.

So no offense but F*ck you 27 club

Hey, Johnny Blaze...F*ck you. And who gives a sh*t if he plays "white, asian" roles. How many oscars nominations does he have? Two, and like you said, "2 is more than enough." So swallow that statistic, or "this foot is going up that ass."

Well, now that I got that off my chest. WIll Smith is one of my favorite actors, and Steven Spielburg's a great director. This should be good. Never heard of the original before; might have to get a hold of it.

Wait but Chan-Wook Park's original was based off the comics of the same name.
So how the f*** is that any different from what Smith & Spileberg are doing?

So what are they trying to say well this won't be exactly like the way the Psycho remake was done.

I reckon they are just trying to say this crap to avoid the fan uproar made due to the remake of this film happening, because few know that Oldboy was adapted from a comic.

Also when i see the main character i don't visualise Will Smith in the role if it was made by America, i see Al Pacino, he has the scruffy hair to suit the image.

I can dig it. I'm sure it's very dramatic when Smith eats his first Bic Mac after spending years in solitude.

Yeah, the film Oldboy is amazing, but there are way too many cultural boundaries they would have to cross to adapt it into an American movie. It's just something that fundamentally would not translate. I haven't read the comic but I can't imagine that it is that different from the movie.

Anyone who hasn`t seen it yet, go and get it right away! one of the BEST movies ever from Korea (and the rest of asia).
I am still very sceptic to a hollywood remake of this movie.

    Will see how it goes.
Anyway check it out, its brilliant!

Smith is an egotistocal ass. its bad enough he trys to play a white mans role in most of his movies (wild wild west, Iam legend) now hes trying to play an asian man's role? jerk.

I know nothing about Oldboy. However, Smith's my fav actor, so it's got that goin for it. If somebody who actually knows sh*t about Oldboy and doesn't think he's right for the role, please tell me so I can keep my mouth shut. As for Spielberg, he's one of the greats, but lately, and I've voiced this before, he's mediocre. I mean, it used to be "HEY, A SPIELBERG MOVIE, YES!" Now it's just "Oh, ANOTHER Speilberg movie." I still like his work, but in my opinion, he's spread himself out too thin. He takes on multiple projects at once. Jaws and Jurassic Park were when he was in him prime. Now he's coming out of it...in my opinion
