Will Smith and Jaden Smith will star in an untitled sci-fi project for M. Night Shyamalan
Jaden Smith is set to star opposite his father, Will Smith, for director M. Night Shyamalan in an untitled sci-fi adventure, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures. Shyamalan and Will Smith will produce with James Lassiter, Jada Pinkett Smith and Ken Stovitz, Smith's partners at Overbrook Entertainment. The screenplay is by M. Night Shyamalan and Gary Whitta.

Set 1,000 years into the future, a young boy navigates an abandoned and sometimes scary Earth to save himself and his estranged father after their ship crashes.

Commenting on the announcement, Doug Belgrad said, "Night is an outstanding filmmaker who has a tremendous vision for this science-fiction adventure story and we couldn't be more excited to be working again with Jaden after our experiences on The Pursuit of Happyness and The Karate Kid. We're thrilled to have the two of them together on this project."

Shyamalan added, "The chance to make a scary, science-fiction film starring Jaden and Will is my dream project."

Jaden Smith is the twelve-year-old son of Will and Jada Pinkett Smith. He most recently starred in the worldwide blockbuster The Karate Kid, which took in more than $350 million. Smith was nominated for a Teen Choice Award, an Image Award, and a Black Reel Award for his role. Prior to The Karate Kid, Smith starred opposite Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly in The Day the Earth Stood Still and won the 2009 Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Young Actor for his role in the film. He made his debut performance opposite his father in The Pursuit of Happyness, garnering an MTV Movie Award for Breakthrough Performance, a Phoenix Film Critics Society Award for Best Performance by a Youth in a Lead or Supporting Role - Male, a Black Reel Award, and nominations by the Broadcast Film Critics Association, the NAACP Image Awards and the Teen Choice Awards.

M. Night Shyamalan has directed nine feature films: Praying with Anger, Wide Awake, The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, The Village, Lady in the Water, The Happening, and The Last Airbender. The astronomical success of his chilling psychological thriller The Sixth Sense catapulted Shyamalan into the stratosphere of being one of the most sought after young filmmakers in Hollywood. The Sixth Sense has become one of the highest grossing films of all time and received a total of six Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Picture, and two for Shyamalan for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. His most recent film, The Last Airbender was a worldwide hit, taking in more than $319 million globally.

im liking this. been awhile since I saw Will Smith in something. And for M. Night: yeah yeah yeah, i know, LADY IN THE WATER, THE HAPPENING, and THE LAST AIRBENDER could've been better, blah blah blah blah, but from his previous works, I have faith he can get back together. plus, he is not writing this script alone. P.S. i know he didnt direct and write it and that he gave the idea and produced it, but DEVIL basically gave a good start for an upcoming comeback. So his name is slowly getting back up there. haha. anyways, cant wait to see how this turns out.

  12. the Narrator

While some may refute this, up until Seven Pounds, Will Smith was one of THE most appreciated actors on this site, as well as others. If anything, his overzealousness for his kids has harmed his once fruitful career. I'd be lying if I said teaming up with Shyamalan would be a good way to help his career get back to good form. He needs to let his kids be his kids (ala Tom Hanks and Colin Hanks), and do what he does best.

I'm done with Will Smith and M. Night besides Will isn't the best actor around. Putting Will in the light spot again just makes me gag now, even his spoiled rotten children.

@diaigma I definitely agree how his quality lessened. I didn't mind The Village. In fact, up until the twist, I kinda loved it. But Lady in the Water was terrible, The Happening was laughable and Airbender was even worse, so yeah I have no hope for this.

@rufio Actually, I saw The Sixth Sense knowing the twist and still loved every minute of it.

Will Smith is an okay decision, but instead of his son, why not his wife? A woman trying to save her husband and navigating around a barren and scary earth. It just sounds stupid for it to be the kid. WTF is the kid gonna do? WTF does the kid know?

  19. Pjwolsker

For once i would like Will Smith to make a movie without his kid. Pursuit of Happiness was amazing but now he's involved with like everything his kids are. are they going to be in MI3 or Bad Boys 3 too? i hope not

  21. ZanyZap

Well, M. Night Shyamalan made one very strategic move... he cast Will Smith in his next film. After producing that truly awful Devil (it's pacing reminded me of elevator music: dry and repetitive) and after his last three films tanked, he finally realized that no one likes his movies. So, because he knows that all his fans are gone, he leaches onto Smith's fans. I've stated numerous times that Will Smith's name attached to a film is enough to get my ass in a seat, and that still stands, but I wouldn't trust M. Night to direct a 30 second informercial.

At least another writer has credit too. Let's just hope M. Night didn't write the last draft.

I don't like saying this, but here goes: I hate Will Smith's kids. The girl especially seems like a stuck up snob. She acts so arrogantly, yet she does not realize that the only reason she is on screen to begin with is her father. Nepotism, not talent, is what has got her to the spotlight.

  25. Diaigma

@moviefreak97 - Signs was "okay" for me, but after Unbreakable, his quality lessened and lessened. If you check out his chart on RT, it's a steady decline after Signs with no jumps. Kinda sad, really.

I absolutely loved his earlier films. The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs and The Village were all beautifully made. And are among my all-time favorites. When he makes another decent movie I'll be there.

  28. Rufio

@moviefreak97 - i agree "Signs" was definitely his best. Sixth Sense was great too, but not as exciting to watch over-and-over once you know the twist (though it is fun to see the twist played out throughout the film, seeing how many clues you missed the first time watching it). "Signs" is an ageless film - suspenseful even the 10th time watching it.
as for this one - this is a BAAAAAADDDDDDDD combination.
#1 - M. Night is struggling!!!!! i haven't lost all faith in him (ala @skywise), but i def have major reservations any time his name is leading a flim.
#2 - Smith is over-rated and so is Jaden. not to say i could do any better, but they are not as dynamic as they are constantly portrayed to be.
#3 - Simple math: "Over Rated" + "Struggling" = Desperate Combination (at worst) or Bad Combination (at best).
