Will 'Piranha 3DD' Go Straight to Video?

John Gulager is no stranger to the direct-to-video circuit. After his 2006 directorial debut Feast opened in very limited release, his following two sequels Feast 2: Sloppy Seconds and Feast 3: The Happy Finish went straight to DVD. Now, that may happen once again with his upcoming sequel Piranha 3DD.

Supposedly even crazier and gorier than the first remake helmed by Alexandre Aja, Piranha 3DD is bypassing theater screens in the UK, and will instead premiere on Blu-ray and DVD in that country on March 13 of 2012.

Piranha 3DD was supposed to open in November of this year, here in the states. But Dimension Films pulled it from their release slate with no new release date given. The fact that it is going to DVD in the UK doesn't bode well for its theatrical presence here in the US. Which is a shame, as it was made for the big screen in 3D.

According to The British Video Association, Piranha 3DD won't be getting a 3D Blu-ray on March 19th.

Here is the official synopsis provided by the BVA.

"Horror sequel in which a species of violent prehistoric piranha continue to terrify a small town. The chaos unleashed in Piranha 3D (2010) by a group of the omnivorous fish, set free by an earthquake that split the floor of a lake, may only have been the beginning. The tests of marine biologist Carl Goodman (Christopher Lloyd) indicate that these fish were only adolescents, suggesting their parents would be even fiercer adversaries. When the piranha make their way into the town's plumbing system, the terror spreads. Soon swimming pools and even the town's brand new waterpark are infested by the bloodthirsty critters. Can the town's residents, marshalled by survivor of the first movie Deputy Fallon (Ving Rhames), find a way to combat their sharp-teethed tormentors?"

Piranha 3DD was released June 1st, 2012 and stars Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, David Koechner, Jean-Luc Bilodeau, Chris Zylka, Katrina Bowden, Adrian Martinez, Paul James. The film is directed by John Gulager.

They might as well just start throwing money away over at Dimension Films if this is their bright idea. This movie had to cost around 20 million dollars to make. There is no way in hell it makes anywhere near that if it goes straight to DVD/Blu Ray.

the leg gun, looks stupid as hell. I loved Piranha 3D. But the direction part2 is going, is not the best idea ever! Feast was a great film, feast2/3 were stupid as hell. there4, i think this movie will fail badly, I think they should have stuck to the same cast, and by that i mean the "leading cop" and her kids, Ving Rhames, died admit it, he has no biss showing up in this movie. & David Hasselhoff is acting like a clown in the tralier, he needs to act prossional, like a lifegaurd. (if thats wat his role is in this film).
I NEVERR buy str8-to-dvd movies, when a movie does not make it to theaters, that should tell u sumthing, DONT BOTHER WITH IT,
So If this movie looks that bad, i wouldnt mind if they rescripted the whole movie w other cast or same cast, as long as they get it right and in theaters!, even if it takes em 2013-2014 to make.

Hmm... I say stick to theaters. These films are clearly here to mock the 3D gimmick so I applaud them.

I'm glad it didn't come out on November 23 as planned. That would have taken away from the winning lineup of Hugo, The Muppets, and Arthur Christmas. I would love to see this end up in the theatres as it was made for 3D. People just won't pay the extra money for to see it that way. It would probably cost a lot less to buy it on DVD then watch it in the theatres.
