Watchmen Lawsuit Going Forward

While Zack Snyder's new film Watchmen won't be released in theaters until March 6 of next year, it seems the film could be embroiled in a legal studio battle. According to Variety, a judge has dismissed a motion from Warner Bros. to dismiss the lawsuit brought against them by 20th Century Fox over the rights to the Watchmen film.

The ruling is a huge victory for Fox, which may end up as being a profit participant in the film. Fox retained the rights to the graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, which the studio originally purchased in 1991. When producer David Gordon picked up the option on the project out of turnaround in 1994, the judge ruled, he never excersised that option for Fox's remaining interest in the film, therefore, Fox's rights to the film should still be intact.

Watchmen, directed by Zack Snyder, is currently set for release on March 6, 2009. We'll keep you posted on any details involving this lawsuit.

Watchmen was released March 6th, 2009 and stars Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino, Matt Frewer. The film is directed by Zack Snyder.

    News of the proceeding lawsuit comes just days after Warner Bros. decided to shore up its 2009 slate-anchored by "Watchmen" and a new "Terminator" movie-by moving "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" from fall 2008 to next summer. Make of that what you will.

    I also read & saw on CNN...Yesterday, a judge denied Warner Bros. the right to dismiss 20th Century Fox's lawsuit over the rights to the original graphic novel. Fox is serious business: they don't just want money, they want to stop the movie from being released at all.

    Well if the films does come out, & doesn't end up in a vault this will make for some good added publicity!

    let me ask you this "watchman".... do you think most of the people that watched TDK and Batman Begins actually read the comics? I dont think so... the comics is what made the superhero known and then people just automatically are raised knowing a thing or two about superheroes and their powers through talk, or animated television shows (like myself). Infact, i have only read Spider-man comics and Fantastic Four comics, and i must say its nothing special, so what should Watchmen be any different? Only true comic book lovers know a thing or two about these anti-superheroes, like you and i guess "Comrade".
