Sorry about the Yankees comment, that piss-poor taste of defeat is still scrounging around the back of my throat.
As for the film and its rating, I agree with the general consensus. But PG13 or not, my gut says Cameron's so-called magnum opus will fall flat on its blue-flat-nosed-face. A simple example, almost ninety percent of my friends, people in line at the theater, the fat blockbuster attendant, all think it looks strange and stupid. A lot of WTF stares shot Cameron's way.
The only sure-money is the die hard Cameron fans, many of whom have probably abandoned ship during his absence. Sure, you'll draw in the bored December crowd, the sci-fi nerds, and average movie folk. But, as D stated, the economy has put some weighty restrictions on people's attendance. I don't think we'll have a Titanic or Dark Knight with multiple trips to the cinema.
I won't pretend to have a degree in box office analyzing, or throw up statistics and facts, I simply believe, Mr. C will be disappointed.
Whatev, I'll still toss my eight bucks at his feet. Anticipation is mid-level; more curious, than excited...

I don't know fallen, the guy hasn't made a movie since Titantic. I'm wondering if he got soft and rusty along the way.

kingbrady... It will most definitely be PG-13, but theres a chance knowing Cameron's taste, he likes some gore and hard core language and crazy action every now and then. And with his pride and ego, he may very well just do it (make it R). Lol. You should know that about him.

Yeah, Diaigma, i would have to agree with you. Paramount shows promise to lead next year, because all I really see bringing in big money for Fox is the third Chronicles of Narnia, and Warner Brothers i just see it's harry potter movie bringing in big money. But I always like to root for Universal.

Really?
Uha. Apparently I missed the swap somewhere in the last two years. Anyone think the tide will change next year, given Paramount's line-up?
Lovely bones, Sherlock, Shutter Island, Ironman 2, and Airbender? I'm looking forward to all of those. :P

Brady, when I say Fox, I mean 20th Century Fox, and that is a conglomerate like Sony and Disney my friend. Also, 20th Century Fox hasn't been on top since 1999.

Warner Bros remains on top because they are the conglomerates like Sony and Disney, Fox is owned by News Corp and Paramount with Viacom so you wont see their name at the top of companies with movies, you will see their big daddy's name

Nope, Warner Brothers is on top. Paramount is like 3 percent less than Warner Brothers. Paramount hasn't been the top studio since 2007.

I thought Paramount was the top for movies, at present, with WB next in line.

Fox is only at the top for TV, in regards to movies its still Warner Bros, Sony........they failed on Wolverine, X-Men, Fantastic Four, so they banking on James Cameron to pull the rabbit out of the hat

If this movie is successful, financially and content wise, then this might bring 20th Century Fox back to the top.

oh ok, well this movie has to be PG13, it just has to be........regardless i dont give a sh*t if it is, im over 18, im going to see this film in IMAX, and frankly if it doesnt make $200 million im not gonna be upset or surprised

lol, yeah.
But anyway, I really don't have any interest in seeing this. It's like Space Jam with real people combined with CG, and that turns me off from movies, although I did like Who framed Roger Rabbit, but that was a screwball comedy so i would let that pass.

Ok,lol, maybe I misunderstood you. Because when you said that, in this current economy, it would be unwise for Cameron to make this movie R. Were you just talking about ticket prices all along? But still your saying that PG-13 works for that, and maybe i'm just not seeing it. The only i could see your point is if PG13 tickets are cheaper than R rated. If this would get an R rating, yes, i'm sure it wouldn't make a lot back, but not because of ticket prices, but because kids will not be able to enter. Hollywood produces fewer R rated films because it allows more people to see the movie, no matter how economic times are. Look at Terminator Salvation, that came out with a Pg 13 rating, and during an economic crisis, and that movie made less than every Terminator movie before it. Economic crisis and movie ratings don't match. Yeah, your right some adults do refrain from going to R rated movies, but that's because they're R rated not because of the economy.
Also, do to the budget of this movie, I would have to say that this probably will be PG13, so that it'll make it's money back faster.

I'll put it this way. Despite ticket price increases this year, the average ticket sales are less this year than they have been in previous years. The current economy is a factor in this. With the advent of this film coming out just before Christmas, you'd be surprised how many people are simply not going to theaters this year for whatever financial/holiday reasons they have. I know that kids will not be able to enter an R rated film, whether the economy is bad or not. That's not what I was getting at. For this movie to make as much money as it possibly can right now, while 25% of the US population is currently pinching pennies, they should rate it where no one with 10 bucks to spare is alienated. PG-13 works perfect for that. Like Brady said. If this were R, the film would lose out of at least 25% of what it could have made. Notice too, that in periods of bad economic times, Hollywood produces fewer R rated films and they make more 3-D crap. That's just how the system works :)
Also, believe it or not, there are adults out there who consciously refrain from going to R rated films. I'm not exactly one of them, but I'm pretty picky.
Brady,
PG? we never went that low.
This is Cameron we're talking about. PG's not an option :P
The prospect that this could be R is because, well, this is Cameron we're talking about. All of his famous Sci-Fi films in the past, minus The Abyss, were R. However, I'm sticking with PG-13.

Newkill3000
But still Diaigma, that has nothing to do with the current economy. Kids will never be able to enter an r rated movie whether the economy is good or bad.

here is my 2 cents
1. this film will not be an R rating
2. this film will not make ALOT more if its rated PG vs PG13
3. what makes you guys think this will even be Rated R
4. if a 10 yr old wants to see it, he will be going with his 15 yr old brother or sister or maybe a parent
5. are you guys referring to it not making alot of money based on the rating of pg vs pg13 OR pg13 vs Rated R............because rated R status would drop this film atleast an extra 25% in box office. but PG to Pg13 there really is no difference....it didnt stop 8 yr olds seeing The Dark Knight and this movie doesnt have the fan base as TDK obviously...i will safely assume this film will put up $120 - 200 million

You pretty much answered your question, New. A lot of theaters won't let kids into R rated films, checking for ID and what not. Parental issues play a factor as well. Make it PG-13, no one cares, hence, more sales = more money now. R rated, 1 ticket. PG-13, 2 or 3 tickets, if I can talk the wife into going :P

Newkill3000
Hey, Diaigma, not to argue with you but what does a movie's rating have anything to do with the economy. I mean it's not like R rated movies are extra than Pg-13 movies. I'd see if you said that it's unwise for him to release the movie mainly for IMAX viewing. I think it's going to be PG-13. The reason why R ratings don't make as much money as PG-13 movies is because most theaters don't allow kids inside or parents won't take their kids to see it because it's an r rating.
2 years agoby @newkill200Flag
Diaigma
With our current economy, it would be unwise for Cameron to make this R. I am fairly certain it won't be, unless he decided to have some gratuitous alien love scenes or something. ::shiver:: :P

Fallen, hate to break this to you but you do realize that Avatar has a budget of around 300 mil, which is the highest budget ever for a movie. It doesn't matter being R or PG-13, if this movie fails it'll be a very lonnnnngggggggggg time before they get there money back.

agreed Fallen, they can't make the money back with it being R. I just keep getting more and more excited for this every day.

Crrazzyy! But they have to make it PG-13 or it will be damn near impossible to make its money back and a okay profit.
