Warren Beatty wins his Dick Tracy lawsuit against Tribune Co.
Warren Beatty obtained the rights to Dick Tracy in 1985 from Tribune Co., which he used to star in, direct and produce the 1990 Dick Tracy movie. There is a clause in Warren Beatty's agreement with Tribune that the rights would revert back to Tribune if he wasn't using them for a movie or TV project.
At issue was the 2009 TV special which featured Warren Beatty dressed in character as Dick Tracy, answering questions from film critic Leonard Maltin. The judge ruled this special provided adequate cause for Warren Beatty to retain the rights, even though the special only aired once on the Turner Classic Movies channel in July 2009.
It isn't clear what Warren Beatty actually plans to do with the rights, since that one-time TV special was only made so he could hold on to the property.
Dick Tracy was released June 15th, 1990 and stars Warren Beatty, Charlie Korsmo, Michael Donovan O'Donnell, Jim Wilkey, Stig Eldred, Neil Summers, Chuck Hicks, Lawrence Steven Meyers. The film is directed by Warren Beatty.

@chappy422 you noticed that too? Pacino and Hoffman omitted? (sorry Madonna nobody cares)
@dan1 Jon Hamm, ye done deal....
This is the One for a reboot. Beatty as Producer and final word on script and cast and why not still Direct? Fresh Blood for cast. Both Jennifer Hudson and Lady Gaga for Vixens (again Madonna getting burn), Depp as one of the villains (helikes that makeup crap) the list is endless and yes keep the original makeup, Pacino was a hoot. Watcha think?

@comicbookfan I don't know. I just keep thinking Indy 4, and how that I don't feel like watching Indy 5: The Search For Geritol. Beatty is 74 years old now. If a movie is getting done, I want a mobile Dick Tracy, not a meandering, slow, possibly needing a walker Dick Tracy. Am I being an ageist? Damn right. But for the good of the character, a younger actor could be utilized. Not a 20 year old, mind you, but someone comparable to what Beatty was 21 years ago. How do these names sound: Jon Hamm, Mark Strong, or if you want to skew a little younger, Matt Bomer? Just a few names to think about.

@ejk1 Good idea, I like it. What were you thinking? Like a prequel? Or a sequel, 10 years later?

@comicbookfan It is time for a new Dick Tracy, but perhaps with another actor as the detective. I love the first film, but the age of the principal performers--Beatty, Headly, and Pacino--could be harmful. A new cast, handpicked by Beatty, could prove to be a better course.

Tracy was a great movie, but the list of who is in it dosnt have the biggest stars? Pacino, Madonna, Willaim Forsythe, and Dustin Hoffman.... Three of which are some of the greatest actors of today.

Great. Now go do something with it. Dick Tracy was a Baby Boomer nostagia movie in 1990. How many people under 30 years old even know what Dick Tracy is?

@comicbookfan Lol. That is awesome. I had no idea this was even going on. And I agree, Breathless being dead can only be a good thing as far as Madonna's concerned. Yuck, indeed.

The Judge (if he/she didn't) should've put a time-frame upon Beatty to make something new.
Also, the headline and Blurb on the Front Page make it sould like there is something in the works, yet the full article doesn't mention anything at all, only a Special that aired One-Off in 2009...

@thedude-abides Isn't it interesting how we were JUST literally talking about this?
Warren Beatty has been trying to get the Tribune off his back for 20 years now. They violated the agreement and he called them on it. This is GREAT news. He prob wants to make a sequel then. Even though everyone's 20 years older... and thank god Madonna's characteris dead, while Breathless was a sexy hot vixen in the original movie, Madonna today would be yuck.
