Variety reports that Warner Bros. is leaping backwards to the 13th century with a Marco Polo film.

Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend) is going to direct for Erwin Stoff at 3 Arts Entertainment.

Warner Bros. bought the pitch preemptively from scribes Adam Cooper and Bill Collage. They are also going to write the script.

The presently untitled project is seen as a fantasy-adventure instead of a biopic. The studio isn't saying too much about the storyline.

"We see this as something that takes place in the Orient of our imagination amid the cultural clash of the East and the West," Cooper stated.

Marco Polo was a Venice merchant who traveled with his father and uncle through Asia for 24 years during each trip. At this time the Mongol empire of Kublai Khan stretched into Eastern Europe. Lawrence will exec produce.
