Warner Bros. Bringing Robotech to the Big Screen

Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to the animated classic Robotech. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tobey Maguire is producing the film through his production company Maguire Entertainment with an eye to star in it as well.

Craig Zahler has already been hired to write the screenplay, which will update the cartoon series from 1985. The sci-fi episodic adventure took place on Earth, at a time when the world's leaders had come together to make giant robots from technology that was found on a crashed UFO. Mankind is forced to use their new robots to fend off three separate alien attacks.

The film is set to become a major franchise for Warner Bros.. Maguire stated, "We are very excited to bring Robotech to the big screen. There is a rich mythology that will be a great foundation for a sophisticated, smart and entertaining film."

Doing a remake of the original Macross would probably work better than rehashing through this bastardized version known as Robotech.

Tobby Maguire has made 3 successful spiderman movies in the lead role. hollywood in general likes to butcher a good story (cram the whole thing into 2 or 3 hours). the only film that I think did really well @ the 3 hour mark was schindlers list. Not sure if robotech could hold its own as a 3 hour film.

that being said Maguire productions is doing the story. Tobby Maguire grew up probably hang off the tv waiting for that stirring orchastra music and film strip to start rolling every day. Most of the production staff too. Maguire has the franchise rights. He's got warner and harmony gold staff. Warner has done batman 4 or 5 times, spiderman?? the did that whole thing right?. Harmony has launch a successful robotech webpage, toy line, webstore, several animated remasters and new film.

the only way they could get a whole story and remain true to Robotech is to copy the graphic novel of Genesis (the prequel in the Ballentine books). Anything else would mean to much editing and story rewrite. Don't rewrite stories Hollywood you suck at it. Just ask Tolkien... Oh, he can't hear you he rolled over.

If they kill Robotech with this movie,oh my god im gonna cry so much. If they make it awesome, I will be happier than i was at transformers, and i was happy like a kid at christmas when transformers came out. imagine happier than that. That COULD be me.

If the Robotech film is done correctly they can have many movie sequels within the Macross saga itself and build up a solid fan base again but I'm afraid their just going to chop it all up and spit out a crappy film with lousy special effects, story lines, and omitting established characters just to make a quick film for a quick buck. I really want to see this done right as to see Robotech come to life as many of us did as teens growing up with this series. I just hope Transformers was just a prelude for what is to come when Robotech hits the scene.

    Hmmm

They might Mess it up (as in Holliwoodize) it to the point that it is only to sell tickets and raze hype.
DooM is a prime example, where they sellout the story for hype, (like the genetic monsters instead of hell spawn.)

I'm a bit apprehensive about it.

Honestly, this is probably the best news I've heard in regards to remaking shows from my childhood.

Maguire picks his movies very carefully, and if he's going to be in it AND produce it, it could turn out to be good. I'm glad that the Transformers movie opened up the idea that big robots duking it out in our world isn't a bad idea.

YES, it's like Transformers but Robotech came FIRST. Secondly, I agree the characters will need a little bit of tweaking but not a whole heck of a lot. Out of all the "Anime" from that era Robotech's characters had the most depth. Why do think that it has lasted as long as it has. It's almost a cult classic if you think about it.

Out of all the anime in the world they pick Robotech? Don't get me wrong, I loved the series when I was a kid and now have the entire collection on DVD. But, they are going to have to do some mayor rewriting to make the characters live action quality. I would personally like to see Neon Genesis Evangelion, Perfect Blue, or better yet RahXephon (because it has a more Hollywood ending) adapted to a live action film.

I havent really heard of Robotech before, but this sounds like it could be cool. It sounds like a take off from Transformers or something.......
