Walt Disney Pictures Stops Production on The Order of the Seven

Saoirse Ronan's The Order of the Seven gets shut down at Disney
Disney has pulled the plug on The Order of the Seven, a new rendition of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs set in Asia.

The project had been in development for a while, with Saoirse Ronan signing on to star in February. Disney even hired Iron Man writers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus to polish the script last week. But now all of that development work has been stopped. The studio has been re-evaluating their big-budget projects, after the box office failure of John Carter. The Order of the Seven's budget was not disclosed, although it was a high enough number to have the studio reconsider their options.

The story centered on a woman in 19th Century Hong Kong, who flees from her wicked stepmother and finds solace with seven brave warriors. The men belong to a clan known for fighting dragons and demons.

Michael Gracey was slated to make his directorial debut on The Order of the Seven, but it doesn't seem this project will be moving forward anytime soon.

The Order of the Seven comes to theaters in 2013 and stars Saoirse Ronan. The film is directed by Michael Gracey.

I to heard great things about John Carter. Never read the books but it looks a whole lot better than the Narnia films and they are still being made.(Go figure)

Beauty and the Beast is getting to new TV series and is being filmed up here in Canada. I got on the set last week but not as an actor.

Its too bad about John Carter, i never saw it myself but disney has had some floppy movies recently and while i like the premise of this one it think @vampire2000 said it well what with all the Snow White reimaginings of late. Probably a good call on Disney's part.

I still want to see John Carter tho, as a kid i read all those books.

As much as I love Snow White, with Once Upon a Time, Mirror Mirror, and Snow White & the Huntsman all premiering this year, I feel as if the Snow White card has been played far enough.

There are plenty of other classic fairytales that could use some revamping or modernizing. I for one would love to see a new Sleeping Beauty or perhaps Beauty and the Beast (I'm ignoring the existence of Beastly, just so you know). That's just my opinion, though.

I haven't really seen John Carter but the article never stated that it was a bad movie. He simply stated it was a box office failure. And I gotta agree. With the amount of money it earned against the amount of money put into it to produce and market, it will be considered a failure. Beyond that, I've only heard good things about the movie.

@gandoff2169 Agreed about both this version of Snow White sounding more interesting than the two of this year, and on John Carter. To be honest, I stop listening to people's opinions on stuff if they think John Carter is a bad movie. Obviously people are bound to like different things, but people who actually think it's a bad movie, I really can't trust their critical judgement of anything.

I have a feeling that this movie might not be released until 2014 or 2015.

Yeah, we had like 70 year's without a Snow White film and all of a sudden we're supposed to get 3? A little too much. Snow White and the Huntsman is all we need.

This version actually sounds better then the two that just came out... But killing a rehashing of the same idea is a great idea in the current play of reboots and remakes. But John Carter was a good movie. Anyone who doesn't think so, should take a moment to question their own opinions more realistically. Was it Star Wars? No. Was it Lord of the Rings? No. But it was a really good movie for what it was. A action adventure movie. We should take a step back and remember the realism we felt as young kids or around 10, when we watched a movie like John Carter, and try to watch it with those same eyes. I hope everyone thinks this way on movie's even if you don't like John Carter much. But consider re-watching it with that in mind when it is released in DVD.
