Wallace & Gromit Rank 1st Worldwide

According to The Hollywood Reporter, There might have been something for everyone at the movies this Columbus Day weekend, but not even a G-rated film with beloved clay-animated characters could topple last year's impressive boxoffice grosses for the comparable frame. DreamWorks Animation's release of Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit gave it its best shot, earning an estimated $16.1 million for the three-day frame.

20th Century Fox's In Her Shoes played solidly for a film that primarily drew a female audience with a roughly $10 million opening, and Sony Pictures' The Gospel scored brilliantly within its primarily black-female demographic. But no film had the crossover ability to reach out to a wider audience beyond that for which it was intended.

The overseas boxoffice was somewhat subdued this autumn weekend as the international market noted a smattering of new openings and garnered respectable to moderate performances from holdovers. Leading the boxoffice pack again was Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit which opened in 11 new markets and had a solid gross of an estimated $9.2 million from 1,895 locations and 13 total territories. The comedy had its strongest opening in Mexico, with $1.3 million from 353 engagements, followed by Spain with $900,000 and Brazil with $361,000. But the biggest contribution to the boxoffice of the stop-motion animated Wallace & Gromit came from the U.K. The DreamWorks and Aardman Animations production had paid previews totaling a sterling $5 million from 487 sites. Wallace & Gromit opens Friday in the territory.

Warner Bros. Pictures' Charlie and the Chocolate Factory continued to play strongly on the international stage, collecting an estimated $7.7 million while taking the cume for the Johnny Depp starrer to a stellar $233.3 million.
