Voltron: Defender of the Universe Goes Into Turnaround

Movie Picture
Fox-based New Regency has put robot project Voltron: Defender of the Universe into turnaround, according to Variety.

Ryan Kavanaugh's financing and production venture Relativity Media is in negotiations to back the property, though on a more moderate budget, utilizing the type of cost-effective technology employed in films including 300.

The Mark Gordon Co. still is attached to produce Voltron: Defender of the Universe, which is based on the popular Japanese animated TV series of the 1980s.

Mark Gordon and Jordan Wynn are producers. Bryan Zuriff is exec producing. Producers expect to attach a director within the next week.

Last summer, New Regency picked up the rights to the property, adapted by scribe Justin Marks.

Marks' take is described as a post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City and Mexico, where five survivors of an alien attack band together and end up piloting the five lion-shaped robots that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron that helps battle Earth's invaders.

Voltron: Defender of the Universe is in development .

I can't wait to see the 5 multicolouerd alien-robot lions, being pilote by five random people, saving civilians and the world. This sure does remind me of Power Rangers series now.

I remember Star Fleet. The main ship was called the X-Bomber. I kid you not. Centurions- Power X-Treme. Fraggle Rock, with the Doozers and their constuctions, bizarrely made out of radishes... I'm getting all misty eyed now. Right, it's passed. I'm back in bastard mode now.

As long as we're on the subject, here's news about "The Masters of the Universe" form wizard magazine:

"The Players: Prolific producer joel silver is working with Mattel to bring He-Man and ompany to Warner Bros. and "Voltron" screenwriter Justin Marks is on board to write this one, as well.
The Scoop: As opposed to the Earth-based sotry of the original live-action movie, Marks indicated that the story will be set on Eternia, like the original carttoon. "This is an Eternian movie and it's a story about an Eternian hero," said Marks. "We're not going to Earth. It's an Adam origin story and a Skeletor origin story. We want to see both of them come from and how they got that way.""

I think this will be awesome with the right director, especially as live-action. I'd say Peter Jackson as director, but i doubt it'll happen.

yeah that whole live action too-lame-for-animation action adventure show never appealed to me. the last non-animated kids show i watched as a tike was either fraggle rock or the great space coaster, which it turns out was not that great.

Im with you Turok, By the time all the Power Ranger stuff came out I was too old to even think about that stuff anymore. Plus it wasn't a cartoon, it was a bunch of actors who couldn't act and did battle with plastic guns and swords ;-)

Voltron wasn't big in the UK, but I've never heard of the Beetleborgs at all. If it was around the time of Power Rangers, well, I was already well into my late teens by then.

Hey. I'm under twenty three, and I know who Voltron and Thundercats are. MASK, not so much. What's that one about?

    3 years agoby @vampire2000Flag

You must be a young'in "moviemaster75" most people under 23 probably wouldn't know who Voltron, MASK and Thundercats are. It's to bad, because this was the era that made cartoons and not poorly remade bullsh*t, they call cartoons now.
